Varian Medical Systems To Exhibit the Latest X-Ray Image Detectors, Image-Guided Radiotherapy Systems, and X-Ray Tubes at RSNA This Year

PALO ALTO, Calif. — November 22, 2005 — Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR), a world leader in cancer therapy technology, as well as a premier supplier of X-ray tubes and the PaxScan® line of digital X-ray image detectors, will exhibit several product lines, including real-time fluoroscopic, angiographic, cardiac, and cone-beam CT imagers, at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting in Chicago from November 27 – December 2, 2005.

PAXSCAN DIGITAL X-RAY IMAGE DETECTORS

Varian’s detectors convert X rays into electronic data for the rapidly expanding Digital Radiography (DR) and three-dimensional cone-beam CT market. In fluoroscopic mode, these image detectors can process data and display images at rates of up to 60 frames per second—fast enough to let doctors visualize a child’s beating heart to make a diagnosis.

Varian PaxScan image detectors have been incorporated into systems for surgery, angiography, cardiac catheterization, gastrointestinal imaging, dental imaging, and veterinary medicine, as well as industrial systems for non-destructive testing. In addition, PaxScan detectors are incorporated into the advanced cancer treatment systems offered by Varian’s own Oncology Systems business.

Says Kevin Wilson, chairman and CEO of Sound Technologies, a company that makes the TruDR™ radiographic system for diagnostic veterinary imaging, “With their solid technology, R&D, integration, and support, Varian allows us to create great products and bring them to market much faster and more cost-effectively.‿

According to Gary Okamoto, marketing manager for the PaxScan image detector product line, Varian’s panels range in size from 13 x 13 cm to 40 x 30 cm. Each one incorporates a state-of-the-art amorphous-silicon sensor array with a highly sensitive scintillator and custom low-noise electronics.

CANCER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES

Also at RSNA, Varian will demonstrate elements of the company’s DART™ solution for dynamic adaptive radiotherapy—an approach for using up-to-date image data to adapt a cancer patient's treatment based on constantly-evolving information about changes in tumor shape, size, and position. The company will also exhibit the new ARIA™ Oncology Information Management System, a comprehensive real-time management system and database product for operating filmless and paperless cancer clinics that offer radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and/or surgery.

X-RAY TUBES

In addition to these products, Varian will exhibit the company’s full line of X-ray tubes for medical and industrial imaging applications, including CT and other diagnostic imaging, mammography, and non-destructive testing. Varian Interay, Varian's third party/asset management service provider, will have on display its wide range of X-ray tubes including new replacements for Siemens, Philips, and GE imaging systems.
