RapidPlan Machine Learning Brings Intelligence to Cancer Care Globally

In 2013, Varian introduced RapidPlan™ knowledge-based treatment planning software based on machine learning (ML) algorithms. RapidPlan helps clinicians reduce treatment planning time and improve plan consistency for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). The software uses dose and anatomy information from existing high-quality plans to predict a more optimal dose distribution for new patients, based on their contoured anatomy.

Five years after the introduction of RapidPlan, the use of ML and artificial intelligence (AI) continues to expand to help cancer-care teams make better and faster decisions, accelerate treatment, and reduce patient stress. For clinics around the world, RapidPlan is at the forefront of this advancement, and has proven an effective tool in working toward a world without fear of cancer. Here, we talk with clinicians in three countries, to learn how the software has lived up to its promise.
