SHANTOU, China, June 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Shantou University (STU) Medical College's Affiliated-Cancer Hospital has become the first cancer treatment center in China to acquire and install the TrueBeam™ system for image-guided radiotherapy. The system, which was made by Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), was donated to the hospital by the Li Ka Shing (LKS) Foundation, a private charitable foundation established to nurture a culture of giving, support educational reforms and help advance medical research and services.
The TrueBeam machine was dedicated in a special ceremony held at the affiliated hospital on June 28, 2011. Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Zhang Guojun, Director of the hospital, said: "This advanced technology, combined with our physicians' expertise and commitment in patient care, will offer a new chapter of possibilities in our long and hard battle against cancer."
TrueBeam was designed to treat tumors with increased speed and accuracy, including tumors that move during treatment as the patient breathes in and out. It features a multitude of technical innovations that dynamically synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery during sophisticated treatments for cancer. With its High Intensity Mode, TrueBeam can deliver high doses quickly and accurately, more than twice as fast as earlier generations of technology. This makes it possible to significantly shorten treatments, potentially enabling clinics to treat more patients each day and to improve precision by leaving less time for tumor motion during dose delivery.
"The TrueBeam system is Varian's most advanced offering for dealing with tumor motion, which makes it especially well-suited for treating cancer of the lung and liver, two types that occur commonly in China," said Tom Duffy, head of Varian's Oncology Systems business in Asia. "Varian is pleased to be working with the Li Ka Shing Foundation in bringing the first TrueBeam to China."
Dr Frieda Law, Executive Director of LKS STU Foundation and Consultant for STU's Medical College, said radiotherapy as a method for treating cancer has been very well developed in the affiliated cancer hospital.
"The TrueBeam system, being the first in the Greater China Region, will definitely upgrade our technology for the fight against cancer," she said.
TrueBeam was approved for sale in China by the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) earlier this year.
