Varian Medical Systems Teams With Onco, Inc. to Offer Cancer Registry Software

PALO ALTO, Calif. and LEBANON, N.J., July 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR) today announced that the company has entered into an agreement with Onco, Inc. to offer OncoLog and Case Finding, Onco's cancer registry software products, to users of Varian's Oncology Information System for managing radiation and medical oncology clinics.

Cancer registry software automates data collection for state and national cancer registries, and helps clinics improve their cancer management abilities by identifying trends and tracking the effectiveness of different treatment approaches.

"OncoLog is a proven tool for cancer program analysis and management," said Christopher Hanna, PhD, Varian's vice president for Oncology Information Systems. "Treatment centers are being asked to collect, analyze, and report data that summarizes their practice patterns and outcomes. This product will enable Varian customers to collect that information and transmit it to agencies that monitor cancer incidence, treatment, and survival trends."

"The OncoLog registry software is fully compatible with the standards that have been set by national cancer registry organizations and accrediting agencies," said Robert Hendrickson, President of ONCO, Inc. "At the same time, the program is easily customizable. An unlimited number of custom data fields can be added, because data collection needs are constantly changing, so the software must be flexible."

Varian has teamed with Onco, Inc. for the provision of registry products as part of the company's ongoing commitment to being a one-stop shop for the entire spectrum of solutions needed to operate a modern, comprehensive cancer treatment program. "We believe that, by providing all the solutions our customers need, we can reduce their acquisition and support costs, and streamline their processes for providing state-of-the-art cancer care," Hanna said. "Quality information is essential to the assessment and improvement of cancer treatment delivery. OncoLog makes it possible for our customers to gather that information quickly and securely."
