UK's National Health Service Selects 20 Varian TrueBeam Systems for Cancer Treatments

CRAWLEY, United Kingdom, Nov. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- NHS Supply Chain has placed an order for a further 20 TrueBeam™ machines from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) as part of an ongoing program to replace older machines and institute modern radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments for patients in the UK's public hospitals. The order, placed in September, also includes ten PerfectPitch treatment couches and 50 licenses for Varian's RapidArc® and Eclipse™ software systems.

"As the leading provider of radiotherapy equipment and software to the NHS, Varian is committed to ensuring patients have access to cutting edge technology while also recognizing that modern healthcare must be efficient, effective and affordable," said Adele Lyons of Varian Medical Systems. "The TrueBeam technology will enable the NHS to meet all of these objectives. We share a goal with the NHS to help save many more lives each year."

Under the deal, NHS hospitals across the country will take delivery of TrueBeam systems through the NHS Supply Chain. This deal follows similar orders from NHS Supply Chain in 2013 and 2014, when a total of 30 TrueBeam systems were ordered.

Jason Lavery, Trading Director of Capital Solutions, NHS Supply Chain, welcomed the opportunity to deliver value direct to the NHS, while increasing access to modern radiotherapy treatment systems. 'By working in partnership with the NHSBSA, the Department of Health and Varian Medical Systems, we are all able to provide a structure for the NHS that supports both the national direction for providing world class cancer treatment and achieving best value in managing capital equipment. With the increasing pressure on budgets it is vital that we work together to maximise benefit for the NHS.'

Varian's TrueBeam system is equipped with a high dose delivery rate that enables some treatments to be completed faster than was possible with earlier generations of radiotherapy technology. It incorporates numerous technical innovations that dynamically synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery during a radiotherapy or radiosurgery procedure. TrueBeam has been designed to advance the treatment of lung, breast, intracranial, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer.

PerfectPitch couches allow six degrees of movement, enabling more angles of attack on the tumor. Eclipse is the world's leading radiotherapy treatment planning software and RapidArc technology enables image-guided intensity modulated radiotherapy treatments to be delivered with speed and precision.
