Varian Medical Systems to Exhibit TrueBeam™ System for Image-Guided Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery at ITEM Exhibition in Yokohama, Japan

YOKOHAMA, Japan, April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR), a leading manufacturer of medical devices for treating cancer, will exhibit the company's advanced technologies for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery at the International Technical Exhibition of Medical Imaging (ITEM) 2013, taking place here later this week.  This year for the first time, Varian's exhibit will include its TrueBeam™ medical linear accelerator for treating tumors non-invasively, from outside the body.  Varian will also showcase new Japanese language versions of its radiotherapy treatment planning and oncology information management software products.

"This is the first year that we are bringing our TrueBeam machine into the exhibition hall, rather than relying on display materials to convey information about its capabilities," says Makoto Yamada, director of sales and marketing for Varian in Japan.  "We are looking forward to showing clinicians from across Japan how this machine can be used to deliver advanced forms of radiotherapy and radiosurgery quickly and precisely, using software applications that are entirely in Japanese."

In addition to the company's cancer treatment technologies, Varian will also show a full range of X-ray tubes for fluoroscopy, angiography, cardiology and cone-beam CT imaging, as well as the company's PaxScan® line of flat-panel digital X-ray image detectors, which are used for filmless imaging in medical, dental, and other applications.  Varian's imaging components are designed to facilitate rapid, high-quality imaging in medical, dental, veterinary, and industrial applications.

Tumor Tracking Symposium

Varian is also sponsoring a luncheon seminar on the topic of real-time tumor tracking without the use of implanted fiducial markers, as part of the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Japan Radiological Society (JRS), which meets during the ITEM exhibition event.  Noriyasu Homma, Ph.D., associate professor at the Tohoku University Cyberscience Center, will talk about his efforts to develop a system that could augment the imaging capabilities of a linear accelerator to enable real-time tumor tracking during certain treatments.

The International Technical Exhibition of Medical Imaging 2013 will be held from April 12-14 at the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall.  This comprehensive academic exhibition, managed by the Japan Medical Imaging and Radiological Systems Industries Association (JIRA), has been held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Japan Radiological Society (JRS), the Annual Scientific Congress of the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology (JSRT), and the Scientific Congress of the Japan Society of Medical Physics (JSMP), since 1988.
