Varian Medical Systems to Showcase Oncology Practice Management Products at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology

CHICAGO, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ASCO Booth # 20087 -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) will exhibit the company's full spectrum of oncology practice management software products at the 2012 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), taking place in Chicago June 2-4.  Varian has also been chosen to showcase its ARIA® oncology information system within ASCO's onsite Electronic Health Record Vendor Lab, where ten selected vendors will demonstrate their products in the areas of clinical decision support, chemotherapy ordering, and care coordination.

"This will be our sixth year participating in the annual ASCO EHR lab," said Charmaine Lawrence, product marketing manager.  "We'll be showing our latest ARIA release, which has been certified for e-prescribing and also for use in demonstrating stage 1 'meaningful use' of an electronic medical record system, so it can be used to qualify for ARRA HiTECH Act funding from the federal government."

ARIA and Varian's other software solutions enable treatment centers to manage a cancer patient's experience, from diagnosis to survivorship.  The products on display at ASCO will include:

  • ARIA oncology information system, a comprehensive software solution that combines an oncology-specific patient electronic medical record (EMR) with powerful tools for managing clinical, administrative and financial operations in multidisciplinary settings.  ARIA for medical oncology provides comprehensive chemotherapy management tools, with a library of over 300 disease-specific regimens, decision support, e-prescribing, and automatic checking for drug interactions.
  • Active Patient Portal, a Web-based application that gives patients online access to information from their electronic medical record (EMR). Offered in partnership with Equicare Health, Inc., it provides patients with information from the ARIA medical record, updated continuously throughout a course of treatment.
  • EQUICARE CS, a cancer survivorship case management system designed to help oncologists provide cancer survivors with proactive follow-up care.  Also a joint offering with Equicare Health, Inc., EQUICARE CS was recently added to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer "Best Practices Repository" as a recommended tool for managing cancer survivorship programs.

"Varian is committed to offering software solutions that enable clinicians to design a personalized care plan for each patient, and then manage that patient's journey from initial contact through long-term follow-up after treatment," said Chris Toth, vice president of marketing.  "We're looking forward to showing ASCO attendees some of the most comprehensive management tools available for operating a modern, multidisciplinary treatment program."
