Varian Medical Systems to Showcase New X-Ray Tubes and Flat Panel Detectors at the ECR Annual Meeting

SALT LAKE CITY, March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ECR Booth #313/Expo C - Varian Medical Systems, Inc., X-Ray Products, will be showcasing a comprehensive imaging portfolio of PaxScan® digital image detectors and X-ray tubes for fluoroscopy, angiography, cardiology and cone-beam CT imaging at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) annual  meeting in Vienna, Austria this week.

"Our exhibit reflects our commitment to the industry's demands for technically advanced X-ray tube and flat panel solutions," said Steve Kimmel, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Varian X-Ray Products.  "The new panel and tube platforms offer a path to improve image quality, greater cost efficiency, and potential for increased patient throughput."

The products to be highlighted at ECR are:

  • The new M-1500, Varian's first X-ray tube developed specifically for advanced mammography applications such as tomosynthesis and CT.  The M-1500 provides exceptional performance in a space efficient design.  "This revolutionary design provides for high throughput and performance in specialized mammography applications," said Dennis Runnoe, vice president of Research and Development Engineering.
  • The new PaxPower FP X-ray tube which is optimized for interventional procedures and portable surgical CT systems.  The new PaxPower FP tube platforms were developed with a smaller footprint and higher power. "This new technology represents a new generation of diagnostic tubes incorporating much of what we have learned over years of anode-grounded CT development.  This new tube technology provides a dramatically smaller and lighter package with higher heat dissipation allowing for higher patient throughput," said Kimmel.
  • The new PaxScan® 3024M flat panel detector designed for full field digital mammography.  The compact design, incorporating a narrow edge and rapid image-acquisition capabilities, enables radiologists to acquire images close to the chest wall with results in seconds.  This architecture is based on amorphous silicon (a-Si) design allowing rapid frame rates for advanced mammographic applications.  "In addition, this exciting new product promises to extend the capabilities of digital mammography into emerging markets where its environmental stability makes it an attractive option over existing technologies," said Rick Colbeth, Research and Development Engineering manager for Varian's PaxScan® Imaging Products.
  • The new PaxScan® 4336R "hot swap" technology, which allows the radiographic panel to be unplugged and plugged back in without having to reboot the system.  "This new feature easily moves the panel from the X-ray table to a chest stand without interrupting workflow.  There is no longer a need to power down while swapping the panel and the feature enables using one panel per room or one panel across multiple rooms, lowering system costs," added Colbeth.

Continuing the commitment to innovation, Varian will highlight other tubes and flat panel detectors designed for space efficiency and high performance.
