Varian Medical Systems to Highlight Trilogy™, A Powerful New Product for Robotic Non-Invasive Neurosurgery, at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) will feature the newest, most advanced imaging and treatment technologies for image-guided non-invasive neurosurgery at the upcoming annual meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) from October 8-13 at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

"We are offering a clinically advanced and cost-efficient alternative to single-purpose radiosurgical devices that are limited in functionality and flexibility," said Lester Boeh, vice president for Varian Medical Systems and general manager of Varian Surgical Sciences. "The Trilogy system can be used for non-invasive, painless, neurosurgical treatments of tumors, vascular malformation, and other neurological abnormalities."

The Trilogy Stereotactic System, introduced in 2004, makes it possible to treat small areas in the brain and other parts of the body rapidly, with powerful, precisely placed beams. "This is the most powerful, precise, and versatile treatment solution ever developed, and it represents the future for patient treatment delivery, improving the quality of care while increasing efficiency and lowering the cost of treatment," Boeh said.

Shands HealthCare at the University of Florida in Gainesville -- a notable neurosurgery treatment site -- recently ordered the Trilogy System for image-guided neurosurgery. According to Frank J. Bova, PhD, professor of neurological surgery at the University of Florida, his team chose the Trilogy system because it is "a single therapeutic tool that exceeds the capabilities of all other radiosurgery devices on the market. The high accuracy and guidance systems make it possible for us to deliver intra and extra-cranial treatments using a single integrated unit. Varian has provided the radiosurgery team with unprecedented access to the fullest complement of radiosurgery tools commercially available."

In addition to the Trilogy Stereotactic System, Varian will be exhibiting an assortment of hardware and software products for the neurosurgery market, including:

-- Patient immobilization and motion management devices for stereotactic
      radiosurgery
-- The SonArray 3-D ultrasound patient positioning system
-- Treatment planning software for stereotactic radiosurgery
