Varian Medical Systems to Exhibit New Technologies for Treating Cancer and Neurological Conditions with Ultra Precise, Image-Guided Radiosurgery

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) will exhibit advanced X-ray imaging and treatment technologies for image-guided radiosurgery at the upcoming annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) from April 16 to 21 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Varian Surgical Sciences, an organization created within Varian Medical Systems earlier this year, will exhibit image-guided robotic radiosurgical solutions built around the company's new Trilogy™ Stereotactic System and On-Board Imager™ device, a sophisticated imaging tool that enables clinicians to position patients for treatment with sub-millimeter accuracy.

"We are offering a clinically effective and more cost-efficient alternative to dedicated radiosurgical devices that are limited in functionality and flexibility," said Lester Boeh, vice president for Varian Medical Systems and manager of Varian Surgical Sciences. "We have advanced our technology to the point that it now can be used for non-invasive, painless, radiosurgical treatments of tumors and vascular malformations, as well as certain functional and so-called 'inoperable' conditions."

The Trilogy Stereotactic System, introduced in 2004, makes it possible to treat small areas in the brain and other parts of the body rapidly, with powerful, precisely placed beams. "This is the most powerful, precise, and versatile treatment solution ever developed, and it represents the future for patient treatment delivery, improving the quality of care while increasing efficiency and lowering the cost of treatment," Boeh said.

The Trilogy accelerator has been installed and is being used for radiosurgical treatments at a number of sites, including:

*    Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia
   * Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee
   * M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas
   * Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas
   * Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama

In addition to the Trilogy System, Varian Surgical Sciences will be exhibiting an assortment of hardware and software products for the neurosurgery market, including:

* Patient immobilization and motion management devices for
        stereotactic radiosurgery
   * The SonArray 3-D ultrasound patient positioning system
   * Treatment planning software for stereotactic radiosurgery
