Varian unveils VitalBeam for affordable advanced radiotherapy

At the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) meeting in Barcelona last year, Varian unveiled the VitalBeam™ radiotherapy platform, designed to offer clinics an affordable option for implementing advanced image-guided radiotherapy. This cost-effective technology package was designed to enable high-quality, high-throughput radiation therapy, and to enable clinics to expand their capabilities over time.

“VitalBeam incorporates many of the innovations that were developed to enhance precision and safety, and streamline workflow on the TrueBeam® platform,” says Ed Vertatschitsch, vice president, treatment and imaging solutions. “Our goal was to provide customers with a flexible system that can be upgraded to meet their clinical needs as they evolve.”

VitalBeam has received 510(k) clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as the CE mark. It is available in the United States and Europe, and will be introduced in other markets across the world as regulatory clearances are obtained. It is available in a basic package with an 80-leaf collimator for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), low-dose megavolt (MV) imaging, and respiratory gating. Clinics can add RapidArc® radiotherapy, higher dose delivery rates, kilovolt (kV) and conebeam computed tomography (CT) imaging, and a higher-resolution 120-leaf collimator. All VitalBeam configurations offer up to three photon and six electron energy levels for flexibility in treatment.
