PALO ALTO, Calif., July 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) announced today that radiation oncology professionals using its Eclipse™ treatment planning software created the top scoring head and neck cancer treatment plans at the 2017 International Radiotherapy Plan Competition. The treatment plan competition is part of the Radiation Knowledge Initiative, a cloud-based platform for sharing best practices in the medical radiation field.
The two highest scoring plans and seven of the top 10 plans at the competition were created using Varian's Eclipse treatment planning software and employed volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) to target head and neck cancers. The 2017 International Radiotherapy Plan Competition attracted more than 460 planners from around the world with the goal of sharing the best planning skills to improve radiotherapy plan quality. Complete results of the competition can be reviewed at https://radiationknowledge.org/.
"Congratulations to the top scorers in the 2017 International Radiotherapy Plan Competition," said Pat Kupelian, vice president of medical affairs at Varian. "We are delighted to partner with planners to create such high-quality treatment plans for better patient care, and we are honored to see the validation of our efforts to make Eclipse a best-in-class tool for fighting cancer."
The results of the competition were announced on June 21, 2017, at the International Conference on Advances in Radiation Oncology (ICARO2) in Vienna, Austria.
In use at more than 4100 cancer treatment centers around the world, Eclipse software creates an optimized radiotherapy treatment plan based on a physician's dose instructions, and information about the size, shape, and location of the tumor to be treated with radiation. The Eclipse software incorporates unique features such as RapidPlan™ knowledge-based planning, which can make it easier and faster to plan sophisticated cancer treatments like stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and RapidArc® radiotherapy.
