Varian Medical Systems Publishes First Sustainability Report Outlining Environmental, Charitable, Safety and Health Access Achievements

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 19 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), a world leader in radiotherapy and X-Ray imaging technology, is announcing the publication of its first comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, detailing the company's policies and achievements in extending care, protecting resources and helping to save lives. The 'Varian Sustainability' Report has been produced as part of the wider investment to continually improve sustainability performance and transparency.

"We have a responsibility to achieve our business goals in a socially and environmentally responsible manner," says Tim Guertin, chief executive officer of Varian Medical Systems. "While our company continues to develop better therapeutic capabilities for fighting cancer and other diseases as well as better components for X-Ray imaging, we strive to do so in ways which extend access to advanced care, improve clinical outcomes, optimize safety and make a positive impact on the communities where we operate."

In 2010, Varian commenced a company-wide undertaking to examine sustainability performance and identify challenges and opportunities to be addressed over time. This effort involved the close participation of senior leaders from all divisions, key geographies, and core functions.

The report, based on internationally-recognized GRI (global reporting initiative) parameters, reiterates the company's stated mission to help save an additional 100,000 lives each year, while outlining the governance structure that determines Varian's sustainability activities and setting goals for future achievements. The report's content is divided into four key areas: environmental, health access and outcomes, safety and responsibility, and colleagues and communities.

The report is available for customers, investors, and the general public at www.varian.com/sustainability. Varian plans to update its sustainability report in mid-2012.
