Varian to Showcase Oncology Practice Management Products at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology

CHICAGO, June 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ASCO Booth # 2091 -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), world leader in advanced radiotherapy and radiosurgery solutions for treating cancer and other disorders, is exhibiting a full spectrum software for e-prescribing, cancer survivorship case management, business office management, cancer registry, and information system data mining in the company's booth at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, taking place in Chicago June 5-7.

ARIA and E-Prescribing

The main focus of Varian's exhibit will be the ARIA® oncology information system, which can be used to manage medical or radiation oncology, as well as comprehensive cancer centers encompassing both.

"ARIA for medical oncology just received Surescripts® e-prescribing certification for new prescriptions and refill requests," said Maureen Thompson, senior director of oncology information systems at Varian.  "We'll be showcasing how physicians using the ARIA system can exchange prescriptions electronically with pharmacies connected to the Surescripts network."

Active Patient Portal

Varian will also exhibit its new Active Patient Portal, a Web-based application that gives patients online access to information from their electronic medical record (EMR).  Offered in partnership with Cogent Health Solutions, the Active Patient Portal provides patients with information imported directly from the ARIA oncology information system, including all appointments and treatment summaries that are continuously updated throughout the course of treatment.

"Ensuring that patients have reliable electronic access to their personal health information is a central component of recent U.S. government legislation concerning "meaningful use" of healthcare information technology," said Thompson.  "The new patient portal gives patients access to their personal health information at any time."

Partner Kiosks

Other third-party software products that have been configured to work with Varian's ARIA system will also be on display.  These include:

  • EQUICARE CS from Cogent Health Solutions, a cancer survivorship case management system designed to help oncologists provide cancer survivors with proactive follow-up care to achieve a better post-treatment quality of life.
  • OncoLog from Onco, Inc., cancer registry software that automates data collection for state and national cancer registries, and helps clinics improve their cancer management abilities by identifying trends and tracking the effectiveness of different treatment approaches.
  • OncQT, a tool that enables users to retrieve data from Varian application databases, for customized reporting and analysis.  "OncQT simplifies the reporting process, making it easier for clinicians, managers, and other non-technical users to turn stored data into useful, actionable information," Thompson said.
  • Centricity from GE Healthcare, a comprehensive practice management and business office solution that Varian offers through Unlimited Systems.

"Varian is committed to offering a full spectrum of software solutions designed to support a multi-disciplinary approach to oncology treatment," said Thompson.  "ARIA was rated the number one oncology IT solution for two consecutive years by KLAS, an independent research firm that reports on the performance of healthcare vendors.  In addition, Varian is committed to meeting all U.S. government-mandated certification criteria so that customers will be able to use our products to qualify for the HITECH Act incentive payments, once those requirements have been finalized."
