World-Renowned Cancer Center to Become All-TrueBeam Clinic in Battle Against Cancer

MAASTRICHT, The Netherlands, Oct. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Europe's leading cancer centers will be offering radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments using fast and precise TrueBeam systems from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR). The Maastro Clinic has acquired three TrueBeam systems for its main site in Maastricht and a satellite site in nearby Venlo as part of a project to replace all its equipment and software from an incumbent supplier.

"This will make a big improvement to the quality of cancer treatments for patients in this region and we are delighted to be able to introduce TrueBeam treatments in the Limburg area," says Maria Jacobs, managing director of the Maastro Clinic. "We intend to become the first cancer center in the world entirely equipped with TrueBeam systems."

Dr. Geert Bosmans, heads of physics innovation at Maastro, adds, "This is undoubtedly the biggest project we have ever embarked on. It will enable us to work more efficiently and with very fast, precise and reliable systems while providing more effective radiotherapy for our patients using a single integrated system for radiation delivery, calculation and planning."

Maastro ordered its first TrueBeam in March and it is expected to commence clinical use in early November. Two further systems have been ordered in October for satellite site Venlo where installation is planned for 2012. Maastro has signed a contract for three additional TrueBeam devices which are intended to be installed in stages at the main clinic. The hospital has also ordered a full suite of Varian software for treatment planning and oncology information management.

TrueBeam was designed to treat tumors in a fast and precise manner, including tumors that move during treatment as the patient breathes. Designed to advance the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer, TrueBeam features a multitude of technical innovations that dynamically synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery. With its High Intensity Mode, TrueBeam can deliver very high doses quickly and accurately, more than twice as fast as earlier generations of technology.

TrueBeam can quickly and precisely deliver a broad range of radiotherapy treatments, from stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy to image-guided intensity modulated and volumetric radiotherapy treatments.

Sten Hornsleth, Varian's regional sales director, said, "The Maastro Clinic is internationally renowned as a center of excellence for cancer treatment and scientific research. We are delighted that Maastro has decided to partner with Varian and we look forward to a long collaboration aimed at improving treatments for cancer patients by offering the very best possible treatments."

Professor Philippe Lambin, Chairman of the Maastro Clinic Board, said the institution is looking forward to working closely with Varian in the coming years to foster innovation within the radiotherapy field.
