India's First Trilogy Accelerator Ordered for Leading Cancer Center

MUMBAI, India, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- One of India's premier cancer centers is acquiring the country's first Trilogy® machine from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) to offer patients the most advanced radiotherapy treatments in the world. The Trilogy medical linear accelerator will be installed at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai late next year.

Using the Trilogy accelerator, doctors at Tata Memorial Hospital will be able to offer cancer patients more precise treatments, including image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) as well as stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for controlling and stopping early stage metastatic cancers.

Dr. Shyam Kishore Shrivastava, head of Department of Radiation Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, said, "We wish to treat our patients with the most modern and effective techniques available, which is why we have chosen the Trilogy. This will enable us to offer image-guided radiotherapy treatments with our first On-Board Imager and this is something of which we're particularly proud." The On-Board Imager® makes it possible to target tumors more accurately by taking X-ray images of them at the time of treatment.

Fritz Derrer, Varian's regional sales director, says, "Tata Memorial Hospital is known for its pioneering approach to cancer treatments and this decision to order a Trilogy demonstrates its desire to offer the most comprehensive and effective cancer treatments to patients."

The hospital, which registers 30,000 new patients each year from India and neighboring countries, is currently equipped with three Varian Clinac® linear accelerators. The arrival of the Trilogy accelerator will mean they can care for more patients in addition to offering more advanced treatments. The hospital plans to extend its intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) program which enables staff to concentrate treatment doses on tumors while protecting more surrounding healthy tissue.

A fully-accessorized Trilogy medical linear accelerator, equipped with Varian's On-Board Imager for fast and effective image-guidance, is capable of offering all standard radiation therapies as well as advanced treatments such as IMRT, IGRT and SRS. It is expected to help doctors to improve cure rates for patients while reducing treatment complications.

Since its launch in 2004, Trilogy devices have been installed in numerous hospitals around the world, including leading oncology centers in Malaysia, Taiwan and Australia as well as several top US and European cancer hospitals.
