Varian Medical Systems Spotlights Industry-Leading Motion Management and Radiosurgery Technologies at ESTRO 2013 in Geneva

GENEVA, Switzerland, April 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Booths 5000/4700 Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR), the world leader in radiotherapy equipment and software, will demonstrate its full range of radiotherapy delivery systems and software at the 2nd ESTRO (European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology) Forum, taking place April 19th-22nd. The Varian booth will feature the company's technology and products for radiotherapy, radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and proton therapy.

Varian's TrueBeam™ platform for fast and precise radiotherapy and radiosurgery will be on display along with the RapidArc® image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy system, the PerfectPitch™ six-degrees-of-freedom couch, and the Calypso® 'GPS for the Body' system, all of which are aimed at helping clinicians to deliver treatments faster and more precisely.

Visitors to the Varian booth can also learn more about the company's new EDGE* Radiosurgery™ treatment system, Varian's first dedicated, fully integrated end-to-end solution for planning and delivering advanced radiosurgery treatments using new real-time tumor tracking technology and motion management capabilities.

"The next big advances in radiotherapy and radiosurgery involve continuing improvements in how motion is monitored and tumors are tracked during treatments and Varian continues to offer our most advanced clinical capabilities," said Rolf Staehelin, head of international marketing for Varian's Oncology Systems business. "The ESTRO forum enables Varian to showcase advances in treatment speed and precision."

The latest version of the ARIA® oncology information management suite will also be exhibited. This comprehensive paperless system was designed to streamline clinical, financial, and administrative processes in cancer care, with the aim of making radiation and medical oncology departments more efficient and cost-effective. It can be configured to guide clinical personnel through their daily tasks by automatically activating the next step in a process as each step is completed.

Varian will demonstrate new features in its Eclipse™ treatment planning software that make planning more straightforward and intuitive, including SmartSegmentation® Knowledge-Based Contouring that expedites the process of outlining tumors as well as surrounding healthy organs for planning treatments.

Siemens Partnership
Visitors to the Varian booth can learn about the company's EnVision Better Cancer Care™ global strategic partnership with Siemens Healthcare. Varian and Siemens represent each other's products for radiation oncology customers globally and the two companies are investigating opportunities for joint development of new products for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. Varian is also spotlighting its new respiratory gating system for Siemens CT scanners. In addition, in March, Siemens received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for ARIA connectivity to Siemens ONCOR and PRIMUS linear accelerators, giving Siemens customers a wider choice as aging accelerators are due for replacement. Visitors will be able to learn more about this connectivity between Varian's ARIA software and Siemens medical linear accelerators directly at the Varian and Siemens booths.

Varian BrachyTherapy will be highlighting further integration between the company's family of afterloader systems and the ARIA oncology information suite, focusing on the system's dose tracking capability, as well as displaying the company's fast and flexible brachytherapy treatment planning systems BrachyVision™, VariSeed™ and Vitesse™.

The Varian booth is also spotlighting the company's ProBeam™* proton therapy system which is being installed in new proton therapy clinics globally. The ProBeam system incorporates pencil-beam scanning technology, which optimizes the dose applied to every point within the area being treated. Several new ProBeam features will be demonstrated in the Varian booth, including a new user interface, a more compact robotic patient positioner and advanced imaging capabilities for precise patient setup verification and correction utilizing planar kV imaging and 3-D cone-beam CT imaging.

Oncology Summit
The show kicks off with a Varian Oncology Summit held at nearby Uptown Geneva on Friday April 19th, attracting more than 400 oncology professionals. Held in combination with Siemens Healthcare, this educational event will feature up to thirty scientific talks from physicists, clinicians and other healthcare professionals, examining advances in radiotherapy and radiosurgery.

Symposium
A Varian symposium will take place on Sunday April 21st, focusing on the next steps in stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR), a type of radiosurgery used for indications like lung and liver cancer. This event features presentations on the clinical implementation of Varian's Calypso tumor-tracking technology at Washington University in St. Louis, U.S., advanced SABR treatments for lung cancer at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and applications of Knowledge-Based Contouring at the MAASTRO Clinic in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The symposium will be chaired by Dr. Marta Scorsetti from Humanitas Clinic in Milan, Italy.

*CE mark and international registrations pending for EDGE Radiosurgery and ProBeam. Not available for sale in all markets.
