PALO ALTO, CA — August 23, 2011 — Varian Medical Systems, in collaboration with Accuray Incorporated, has developed an interface that allows cancer care centers to use Varian’s ARIA® oncology information system to manage treatment on the CyberKnife® system. Clinicians at the Phoenix CyberKnife and Radiation Oncology Center in Arizona—a mixed vendor environment using Varian’s TrueBeam™ as well as Accuray’s CyberKnife technology—has become the first center in the world to use ARIA to manage treatments on both systems.
According to John J. Kresl, MD, PhD, medical director for the Phoenix center, ARIA is the first electronic medical record to interface with the CyberKnife Systems’ data management and treatment planning systems.
“With this interface, treatment plan data for the CyberKnife system can be imported into ARIA directly, in a form that is useful when operating day-to-day and delivering treatments,” said Dr. Kresl. “Now our staff members can bring up a plan and prepare for treatment, record the treatments delivered that day along with the quality assurance checks that are integral to our process, record and verify, close the chart, and move on to the next patient without all the manual steps that were needed before this interface was developed. The integrity of the information is more secure.”
"Varian technology has long operated within an open software architecture based on industry standards," said Chris Toth, senior director of marketing for Varian's Oncology Systems business. “ARIA was created with extensive and flexible HL7 and DICOM connectivity to facilitate connectivity with third party systems.”
The ARIA oncology information system is a comprehensive software solution that supports the oncology clinic. It combines an oncology-specific patient electronic medical record (EMR) with functional components for managing clinical, administrative and financial operations. ARIA is now in use at 2500 treatment centers around the world. It has been rated among the top three oncology IT solutions every year since 2008 by KLAS, an independent research firm that reports on the performance of healthcare vendors (www.klas.com).
