Varian Medical Systems Appoints Vice President for Oncology Information Systems

Palo Alto, Calif.; September 29, 2004-- Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE:VAR) today announced the formation of an Oncology Information Systems unit within its Oncology Systems business to develop and market the company’s informatics software for the management of radiation oncology and medical oncology practices. Chris Hanna, an expert in healthcare information systems, has joined Varian Medical Systems as Vice President of the new Oncology Information Systems unit, which now combines the company’s VARiS Vision and OpTx software products for practice management in cancer clinics.

“We are intensifying our focus on developing new markets, products, and customers in the field of oncology informatics, and Chris Hanna is well suited to manage this effort for Varian,” said Tim Guertin, executive vice president of Varian Medical Systems and president of the company’s Oncology Systems business. “He adds to our software expertise, and we are very pleased that he has joined us.”

Hanna was most recently CEO of TeraMEDICA, Inc., a medical software technology company that he co-founded to develop and commercialize software for medical information and image management and storage. In previous posts, he has developed expertise in software products and technology for managing medical images used in diagnosis and treatment planning. Hanna earned his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Guelph in Canada and an undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of British Columbia.
