Varian Medical Systems To Exhibit Digital X-ray Image Detectors, High Energy X-Ray Tubes And Linear Accelerators For Non-Destructive Testing

PALO ALTO, Calif.,August 25, 2004. Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR) will exhibit X-ray products for the nondestructive testing market at the upcoming 16th World Conference on Nondestructive Testing taking place August 30th through September 3rd 2004 at the Palais des Congrès in Montreal, Canada. Varian Medical Systems will exhibit a number of products at the conference:

  • PaxScan™ digital X-ray detection products

  • The new NDI line of High KV X-ray tube sources ranging from 225kV-450kV
  • Linatron-M® High Energy X-ray linear accelerator

PaxScan® Digital X-ray Detection Products Varian Medical Systems is one of the world’s leading producers of amorphous-silicon flat panel X-ray image detectors. These image detectors convert X-ray photons into electrons, which are then converted into digital images with excellent spatial resolution, contrast, and image quality.Varian manufactures a variety of flat panel detectors for radiographic and radioscopic imaging applications.Typical applications include non-destructive testing, cargo screening, food quality control and circuit board inspection, as well as medical imaging. The PaxScan technology is available in a high voltage (HV) configuration for working with X-Ray sources that range from high kV to megavoltage energy levels.

X-Ray Tubes Varian Medical Systems is also the world’s largest independent supplier of X-ray tubes and X-ray tube assemblies for medical, industrial and security applications. The company will exhibit a new line of assemblies designed specifically for nondestructive testing applications. At the conference, Varian Medical Systems will also introduce a new NDI-450 series of bi-polar metal ceramic X-ray tube assemblies for non-destructive inspection (NDI).These X-ray tubes run at a very high energy 450 kV meaning better penetration for nondestructive testing. The ceramic composition makes these tubes rugged, durable, and stable at high voltage levels.

The Linatron™ X-ray Linear Accelerator Varian Medical Systems Security.Inspection Products is the market leader in high-energy X-ray linear accelerators for non-destructive testing. Varian offers modular,as well as compact, portable Linatron™ accelerators. All Linatron accelerators are designed and built in new state-of-the-art facilities, where operations encompass manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, and service management. The Linatron represents the culmination of 40 years of industrial imaging experience.Varian has delivered over 500 systems for NDT and cargo screening applications worldwide. The company’s Security & Inspection Products business is registered to ISO 9001:2000 quality management standards.

The Linatron-M modular linear accelerator is used for inspecting welds, castings, munitions, aerospace products, and bridge structures, as well as for reverse engineering, security, and numerous other non-destructive applications. Its effective beam energies range between 1.9 and 9 MV. Portable Linatron systems are widely used for rocket motor testing, on-site inspection of oil refineries and nuclear power plants, pressure vessel testing, and hardware inspection. Both modular and portable systems offer a versatile, flexible, convenient, and reliable solution to every high-energy imaging problem.
