First European Appearance of Varian’s Trilogy System with On-Board Imager at ESTRO 2004 in Amsterdam, October 24th-28th

EUROPE; September 13, 2004 -- Varian Medical Systems, world leader in integrated radiotherapy solutions to combat cancer, will be exhibiting its new On-Board Imaging system for Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) at the annual European Society of Therapeutic Radiology Oncology (ESTRO) exhibition in Amsterdam on October 24th-28th. Varian is exhibiting the On-Board Imager as part of its new all-in-one Trilogy solution for IGRT, IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and stereotactic radio-surgery. The Trilogy display in Varian Medical Systems’ booth, the largest at ESTRO, is the first such exhibition in Europe.

“This is our largest presence at any show in Europe because we have some innovative new solutions to offer to the radiology and oncology community,” says Walter Frei, Varian’s VP Sales & Marketing Operations, Europe. “The centrepiece will be our new Trilogy linear accelerator, equipped with an On-Board Imager, which enables clinicians to track the motion of tumors while the patient is lying on the treatment couch, deliver radiation at higher doses and with unrivalled accuracy, while utilising whichever radiotherapy treatment is considered the most appropriate for the patient. Trilogy gives the radiographer all the ammunition necessary to target tumors and combat cancer.”

Varian (stand number 2-208 and 2-210) will also be spotlighting its unique RPM Respiratory Gating system, which enables medical staff to deliver treatments more precisely by tracking and adjusting for tumor movements caused by breathing. It will feature its Acuity X-ray system with conebeam CT capability for generating 3D images of tumors and surrounding healthy anatomy. The company’s full range of software and networking solutions for treatment planning, verification and database management will be on show.

Varian’s family of Brachytherapy solutions will also be on display, including VariSource and GammaMed afterloaders and BrachyVision workstations.

Varian is hosting a satellite symposium on Dynamic targeting IGRT during the show - on Tuesday October 26th from 12.45pm - 1.45pm chaired by Professor Ben Slotman of Vrije University Medical Center in Amsterdam, with presentations by Dr Suresh Senan of Vrije, Dr Bruno Sorcini of Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and Dr Peter Cossmann of Hirslanden Klinik in Aarau, Switzerland. The radiation oncology centres at Karolinska and Aarau are the sites of Varian’s first two On-Board Imager installations in Europe.

ESTRO 2004 takes place in Halls 2 and 3 of the RAI International Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam. The show opens on the evening of Sunday October 24th, and a complementary Varian Users Meeting focusing on treatment planning and database management has also been scheduled for Saturday October 23rd at the nearby Hotel Grand.

Note to Editors: Varian Medical Systems will also be demonstrating the Trilogy and On-Board Imaging systems at ASTRO, the annual show of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology & Oncology in Atlanta, Georgia from October 3rd – 7th.
