A childhood interest in physics led Timo Koponen to the leading edge of proton treatment planning

Growing up, not many children dream of solving complex scientific problems like room temperature superconductivity, but this was the plan for young Timo Koponen! At the age of 15, the son of academic parents from the university city of Jyväskylä, Finland, already knew that he wanted to pursue a doctoral degree and a career as a scientist.

Timo’s vision for his future did come true, although perhaps not quite in the way he imagined.

In 2008, Timo completed his Ph.D. in computational physics from the University of Jyväskylä. Despite not having solved the problem of room temperature superconductivity to date, Timo has followed his passion for science and problem solving in other ways.

“While I was finishing my doctoral studies, I started feeling that the academic world and the nature of research were not meant for me. Luckily, at the same time, Varian was seeking an expert in computational sciences to work with product development and they chose me for the position! Over these past years, I have realized that alongside the academic background, my ability to understand the big picture and different people’s needs are my most important strengths,” Timo said.

Today, Timo leads Varian’s product development team of 25 people in Helsinki, a group that develops revolutionary proton treatment delivery systems. Varian is one of only two companies in the world that provide proton treatment planning software. Timo has assembled a unique team of highly competent experts that represent different branches of science and stand at the forefront of future cancer treatment development.

His strategy has been to gather a group of people around him as diverse as possible. And even though only 20 percent of physics students are women, these represent a third of Timo’s team. His team members also represent 14 different nationalities.

“The most rewarding part of my job is building effective, functional teams and identifying the right ‘solvers’ for different problems. Although most of them come from the world of physics, I have tried to gather people with different backgrounds and thinking styles. Diversity enables better results,” Timo said.

Timo and Team

According to Timo, a need for versatile thinking, broad knowledge and the number of multidisciplinary academic degrees will grow in the future. “Whereas we will still need people from physics, computing sciences and mathematics to develop radiation delivery systems, we will also see a growing need for diversified knowledge when it comes to building more intuitive configurations. I believe that the number of academic degrees that combine several “basic sciences” into comprehensive packages like medical technology, will increase in the future.”

At the moment, Timo’s team is working with a project that aims to develop FLASH* Therapy – a non-invasive treatment using an external beam delivered in high doses, at ultra-high speeds (less than 1 second), and in one to three sessions. The efforts of the team and continued technological development will potentially mean better cancer treatments for the future.

“In the years to come, we will be able to customize cancer treatments more and more, take the patient’s individual situation better into consideration, and follow the progress and effects of the treatments more precisely. The improving technology and its lowering expenses will lead to the increasing availability of radiation treatments. This will be visible in the expanding range of treatments, which will improve the prognosis of many patients,” Timo said.

How about Timo’s own future dreams, now that he has achieved those of his childhood? The Doctor of Physics, who enthusiastically explores new paths on his road bike during his free time, says his work at Varian keeps him well engaged and busy for now and he does not have the aspiration to solve the big scientific questions. The problem of room temperature superconductivity still awaits a solution, but some steps forward are taken every few years to solve the issue.

Timo as a child

Nuoren pojan haaveet kävivät - ainakin osittain - toteen.

Olen yrittänyt koota tiimin siten, että vaikka valtaosalla on fyysikkotaustaa, olisivat he ajatusmaailmaltaan erilaisia.

Parhaillaan Timon tiimi kehittää noninvasiivista FLASH* -hoitomuotoa, jossa sädehoito annetaan korkeina annoksina ultrakorkealla annosnopeudella (alle sekunnissa) 1–3 hoitokerran aikana.

*FLASH hoito on prekliinisessä tutkimusvaiheessa.
