Varian Medical Systems Board of Directors Elects Kate M. Smith to Corporate Treasurer

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 12, 2001--Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR) today announced the election by its board of directors of Kate M. Smith as treasurer for the company. Smith, 35, is responsible for managing domestic and international cash management, foreign exchange and derivatives, corporate finance, credit, receivables, stock administration and travel for the company.

"Kate Smith has proven to be an effective financial manager for this business, executing effective hedging strategies and contributing to our ongoing growth in profits through successful cost control initiatives," said Elisha W. Smith comes to this position with a background of Assistant Treasurer of Varian Medical Systems, Inc. Previous to that she was the finance manager, and stock administration manager for the company, where she managed a staff responsible for domestic and international banking, foreign exchange, corporate finance, and stock administration activities. In 1989, Smith joined the company as a staff member in corporate accounting and external reporting. She was subsequently promoted to Treasury and has held several management positions.

She holds a BA degree in finance, real estate and law, from Long Beach State University. Smith also earned an MBA degree from the University of Hayward in California.
