The Annual LFT Day brought industry professionals and students together

Many great minds and future talents met in chilly Turku on February 12th, as students and professionals of medical physics and medical engineering gathered at the Annual Medical Physics and Medical Engineering Day (LFT Day). The aim of the seminar was to improve research and education collaboration between industry professionals and students in Finland.

Ari Harju, Manager of the Radiation Physics team

Varian’s Ari Harju, Manager of the Radiation Physics team, gave a speech at the seminar, presenting Varian’s recent improvements on dose calculation. As an engineer, Ari does not get to mingle with co-professionals at events like the LFT Day so often but recognises the potential in bringing universities and companies together.

“Events like these are important for monitoring what is going on in the medical physics field in Finland, and they are relevant for possible collaboration projects and as recruitment events. Also, meeting face to face with our customers is an important way to gather user experiences, findings, and suggestions for improvements,” Ari says.

Dose calculation is a cornerstone in the planning of any cancer treatment: the better the dose deposition is modelled, the better and affective the radiation treatment can be. Varian’s new model for the collimation system has potential to predict the dose distribution in patient more accurately. The product is still in a proof of concept phase, but the results so far are promising.

“The industry is moving towards more and more accurate treatments. Our new Ethos product will be an outstanding example of revolutionary treatment planning with artificial intelligence and adaptation to patient on a daily basis. The improved treatment methods call for faster and more accurate dose distribution modelling, and this is what we work hard to achieve,” Ari explains.

Ari Harju’s team has an important job at Varian. The Radiation Physics team is responsible for the accuracy and speed of dose calculation in several of Varian’s products. According to Ari, working at Varian is indeed rewarding.

“I have worked at Varian for three years now, and I genuinely feel that my team’s efforts are crucial for Varian. Our mission – fighting cancer – is truly an exceptional cause and reason to do our best. Focusing on the value that we can create for the customers is what drives our everyday work in all our projects. The aim is to have the best possible treatment for each and every patient treated with Varian products,” the engineer proudly describes, with a good reason.

Ari Harju, Manager of the Radiation Physics team

Sädehoidon annoslaskenta on jokaisen syöpähoidon suunnittelussa keskeistä.

Arin tiimillä Varianilla on tärkeä tehtävä. Radiation Physics -tiimi vastaa useiden Varianin tuotteiden annoslaskennan tarkkuudesta ja nopeudesta. Työskentely Varianilla on Arin mielestä erittäin palkitsevaa.

Tavoitteemme on tuottaa jokaiselle Varianin laitteilla hoidetulle potilaalle parasta mahdollista hoitoa”, mies toteaa aiheellisen ylpeänä.
