Varian Medical Systems Introduces New Remote Service Capability For VARiS Vision Software Customers

SAN FRANCISCO--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 5, 2001--Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE:VAR) today announced a new capability that will speed and improve service to radiation oncology centers through remote access to their oncology information systems. Varian will service its VARiS Vision(TM) customers using software from eMation to access customers' equipment via the Internet, substantially improving the response time of a typical service call.

Beginning in early 2002, Varian's customer support specialists will use eMation's Device Relationship Management (DRM) solution to remotely diagnose problems, provide routine maintenance, or even install upgrades to system software.

"In the past, we have serviced our customers' equipment by dispatching an engineer to the customer's site," said Tim Guertin, president of Varian Medical Systems' oncology business. "The eMation solution provides for secure remote access. Our service employees can see exactly what the customers see on their workstations or servers, and can provide technical assistance immediately."

"Technology is enabling powerful new integrated systems that are more beneficial, but also more complex," said Dale Calder, president of eMation. "Service operations must seek new ways to support these complex systems at customers' locations while simultaneously lowering costs. We are extremely pleased to be selected by a market leader like Varian to address this critical business challenge."

The eMation DRM solution utilizes several types of security protection and works with a customer IT Department's standard security mechanisms and firewalls to safeguard device communications. It incorporates patent-pending proprietary software for making direct, secure connections between Varian's support server and a customer's computer.
