Patient Success Story from Maryland Proton Treatment Center

Varian is excited to share this patient success story from the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC). When Frank Rosenthal was told he had cancer at the base of his tongue, he was devastated. With the traditional treatment options, he was told that even if the cancer could be treated, he might lose the ability to swallow and taste. Additionally, it would impact his ability to sing, a true passion of Frank’s. He learned about proton therapy and thought that it would be a better option. He was treated at MPTC with proton therapy, which has been shown to spare more healthy tissue when compared to conventional treatments. He retained his ability to swallow, taste, and even sing!

Important Safety Information: Radiation therapy may cause side effects that can vary depending on the part of the body being treated. The most frequent ones are typically temporary and may include, but are not limited to, irritation to the respiratory, digestive, urinary or reproductive systems, fatigue, nausea, skin irritation, and hair loss. In some patients, they can be severe. Treatment sessions may vary in complexity and time. Radiation therapy is not appropriate for all cancers. Patients should discuss the treatment and side effects with their physicians before starting treatment. Individual treatment results may vary.
