Gabriela Revelo Paiz

Gabriela Revelo Paiz is a woman in STEM and a Finance Business Partner here at Varian, as well as an alum of our Graduate Intern Program.

Paving her own path

Born and raised in El Salvador, Gabriela comes from a family of medical professionals. “Growing up in a family of doctors was a wonderful experience. I feel incredibly blessed to be the daughter of parents who instilled in me work ethic and resilience.”

Being surrounded by people in the healthcare realm instilled in Gabriela the guiding principle of taking care of others. “The deep sense of caring and compassion toward patients are values that are deeply rooted within my family.” But instead of following in her family’s footsteps to med school, Gabriela chose a different path. “I was always good at math, but I found my calling outside of the medical field. I found my passion for economics and finance.”

Intern experience at Varian

Gabriela moved to the United States in 2014 to complete her Masters of Science in Financial Analysis at the University of San Francisco. After graduating, she joined Varian's Graduate Intern Program. “Through the internship program, I had the privilege to be paired with invested managers, caring mentors, and passionate peers,” she recalls. “Interns work on real projects that are on Varian's roadmap. I was grateful for the experience to own this project and to add value to Varian as an intern.”

“During this time, I worked on developing a pricing model for a new product introduction. This opportunity gave me hands-on experience in Marketing Strategy by identifying key risk factors and forecasting pricing viability. I was proud to see this project go live.”

Career journey and growth

While Gabriela has since contributed to different organizations within Varian, her experiences have constructed a wealth of invaluable expertise. “Varian has been able to recognize my skill sets and help me move forward in my career development. It's been an amazing journey here at Varian. Over the last three years, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute in different roles and departments, allowing me to build a well-rounded knowledge of our organization and empowering me to explore different career paths.”

In her current role at Finance, Gabriela partners with senior leaders of product groups and provides trusted finance partnership to drive business growth. “Varian is unlike any other environment. Beyond the financial metrics, we all come to work with one goal in mind, and that is to provide quality and access to care. The opportunity to impact the business and contribute with my expertise fulfills me."

Gabriela laughs about the added bonus of family recognition now that she works in healthcare. “Being in the medical field, my family knows of Varian. Now they brag of the impact I am making in the healthcare industry.”

Risk requires courage

Gabriela’s career wisdom for young women? Take risks. When reflecting on the challenges she has faced thus far, from leaving El Salvador to launching her career, she says, “Take risks, tell yourself to jump. In order to move forward, you need to stop fearing the change.” Gabriela is proud of her Latina heritage, and has a special message for Latina women in tech: “Remember that when you succeed, those around you also succeed.”

Without brave women like Gabriela having the courage to jump out of their comfort zones, we couldn’t make the technological strides we’re making at Varian, getting us closer to a world without fear of cancer.
