Varian Selected to Provide Compact Single-room System for First Proton Therapy Center in Alabama
January 24, 2018

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian (NYSE: VAR) today announced it has been selected by Proton International to install a Varian ProBeam® Compact single-room proton therapy system in the new University of Alabama at Birmingham Proton Therapy Center. Construction on the new center is expected to begin at the end of January 2018, and first patient treatments are expected to start in early 2020. In addition to the equipment, Varian will also provide its ARIA® information management system and Eclipse treatment planning system.

"We are excited about this expansion of our existing radiation oncology department at UAB, and bringing this advanced cancer-fighting therapy to thousands of cancer patients throughout Alabama and the Southeast," said James A. Bonner, M.D., the Merle M. Salter Endowed Professor and chair of the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology. "UAB has a long history of partnering with Varian on advanced radiation oncology technology, and we look forward to expanding the partnership to proton therapy."

The Varian ProBeam Compact system is the only single room system capable of fully rotational intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT).  Treatments can be delivered with an unmatched combination of speed, flexibility and cost efficiency. The full-featured ProBeam Compact includes a cyclotron, Varian's unique Dynamic Peak™ scanning technology for IMPT, a fully rotational gantry, robotic patient positioning tools, and a comprehensive suite of motion management tools.  It incorporates cone beam CT imaging for positioning the patient based on high quality anatomical images with excellent soft tissue resolution, and Varian's world-class Eclipse and ARIA software systems for the planning and managing of treatments.

"We selected the ProBeam Compact system because this fully integrated solution combines the best-in-class components to create a system that will not compromise our treatment protocols," said Chris Chandler, CEO of Proton International. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with Varian to provide increased access to proton therapy around the world."

"This is our second project with Proton International and we are thrilled with the strong partnership we have developed," said Dr. Moataz Karmalawy, general manager of Varian's Particle Therapy division. "This installation is the latest example of cancer centers around the world selecting Varian's single room compact solution due to the full integration with Eclipse and ARIA and a complete solution that does not require clinics to compromise treatments of their patients."

Varian booked and reported the order for the equipment in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2018. Varian is also working on proton therapy system installations at 18 other sites around the world.
