PALO ALTO, Calif.,Sept. 2, 2004 Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE:VAR), world leader in radiation therapy solutions, today announced that it will be supplying nine new linear accelerators, including a unit with its new On-Board Imaging system for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), as part of the latest wave of radiotherapy equipment projects announced by the Department of Health in the United Kingdom. Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology near Liverpool, Christie Hospital in Manchester, Poole Hospital and two London hospitals – Royal Free and St. Barts – have all selected Varian radiotherapy solutions in ‘Wave 6’ of the Cancer Plan announcements.
As well as benefiting from three new Varian Clinac linear accelerators, Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology will also receive the first On-Board Imager to be purchased under the United Kingdom government’s capital investment program.Recently installed in key radiotherapy clinics in the U.S., Sweden and Switzerland, the On-Board Imager is Varian’s latest device for tracking the motion of tumors for remotely adjusting the patient’s positioning during treatment to ensure the radiation dose is accurately targeted at the tumor and not the surrounding healthy tissue.
“The new On-Board Imaging system offers the possibility of a further significant step in improving radiotherapy treatments with more accurate positioning of the patient for treatment and this new device seemed to be both well thought-out and well-engineered to work together with other system components,” says Dr Philip Mayles, Head of Physics at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology.
“The increased precision offered by the 120-leaf Millennium MLC collimator and the opportunity to use gated therapy to improve the precision of the treatment of lung tumors were significant factors in our decision.
“The Trust has also decided to use Varian’s VARiS Vision data management system as the interface to all its Varian equipment because of the better integration of the record and verify system with the linear accelerator.”
“This firmly establishes Varian Medical Systems as the number one supplier of integrated radiotherapy solutions in the United Kingdom,” says Walter Frei, Varian’s Vice President for Sales & Marketing Operations in Europe. “To be selected for five out of the seven hospitals awarded so far in Wave 6 of the Cancer Plan shows that Varian’s solutions are widely accepted as the most reliable, efficient and clinically advanced.”
The new equipment will be installed over the next 18 months and will significantly improve the access of UK patients to the most effective radiotherapy treatments available in the world today.
