“The latest technology, continuous training, meaningful work, different career paths, and the work community support” – for Päivi Tuhkanen, the leader of Varian’s self-governing Cloud Team, these are some of Varian’s advantages for cloud talents. Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, develops cloud-based solutions that hospitals use to plan radiotherapy for cancer. The development work is carried out using agile methods. The goal is to speed up and improve the treatment process and thus increase the availability of radiotherapy to patients. Properly timed, more effective treatments can improve patients’ quality of life.
Agile software development refers to the various methods and principles used to advance the software production process. Even major changes can be made to the functionality of a well-implemented system throughout its life cycle. The goal is to generate value quickly and gather continuous feedback from nursing staff, physicists, doctors, dosimeters, and researchers.
Cloud development involves short and long-term planning
Varian’s cloud development is divided into two-week sprints. The team’s Product Owner represents the voice of the customer and stakeholders and brings the team to discuss both long-term and two-week expectations regarding the development of the service.
Based on the discussion, a sprint is planned and implemented. The sprint is like a small software project involving all the tasks needed to release new features. “Tasks are divided into smaller daily pieces. The difference between sprints and some earlier development approaches can be seen, among other things, in the fact that the cloud environment is always in order and the backlog is always up to date,” says Päivi.
Päivi has a long, 23-year background in Varian. Her career path has progressed through various domains from Software Engineer, Technical Lead, and Manager to Cloud Service Manager. Päivi believes her most important task as a team leader is to support self-governance through strong presence, interaction, and interest “with her co-workers”, or “the team”. "The requirement to be constantly up to date with the technology development and the planning of our own use of time are things that we pay attention to by tailoring suitable training for our top experts and by developing our time management planning," says Päivi.
Significant work with new technologies and methods
The core roles of Varian’s Cloud Services team are Scrum Master, Architect, DevOps, Testers, Software Engineers and Cybersecurity Specialist. The Scrum Master controls the work process, removes barriers, and monitors the progress of the work. The Architect’s job is to orchestrate the development team’s work and transfer the service from the development environment to the end-user environment. The person responsible for Testing verifies the service and identifies its errors and deficiencies. DevOps refers to methods that can be used to automate integration, deployment, and configuration. The task of the Software Engineer is to create, maintain, inspect, and improve the system to meet the set goals and requirements. The health technology industry is highly regulated, so Cybersecurity expertise is key in handling health-related data protection issues.
Joona Hartman is a Cloud Architect. He holds a Master of Science in Software Development and has been with Varian since 2007. Joona is inspired by the frameworks of different service providers for cloud development and knowing their potential. “I enjoy this fast-paced work and being able to see the end result in use by the client. Cloud development connects Varian's and the customer's teams around the world, as there are also many other experts involved besides product developers.”
Jing Wang holds the title of Software Engineer and Full Stack Developer. She holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and has worked in several companies, in software development and testing. Since 2017, Jing has worked on several areas of cloud development at Varian. The priority of the end result, direct communication, and quick response to changes are emphasized in the work of an agile team. "I'm very goal-oriented and I have good project management and communication skills, which are beneficial in this work. In an agile team, information sharing is key. Every other week we have a meeting where we review the status and new features of the service. At Varian, I enjoy openness and freedom, as well as being able to do a high level of meaningful work,” says Jing.
The Cloud Services team has a great sense of togetherness but is also very open to developing new relationships. “It is important that the team is constantly learning new things related to new technologies, stakeholders, and ways of working. In addition, it is important to support the team in the face of challenges and in moving towards successes and new learning experiences,” concludes Päivi.

Uusimmat teknologiat ja itseohjautuvuus nopeuttavat syöpähoitojen suunnittelua
”Uusin teknologia, jatkuva koulutus, merkityksellinen työ, erilaiset urapolut ja työyhteisön tuki”, listaa Päivi Tuhkanen Varianin etuja työnantajana pilvikehittämisen kyvykkyyksille. Päivi on Varianin Cloud Services -tiimin vetäjä. Varian tuottaa pilvipohjaisia ratkaisuja, joita sairaalat käyttävät syövän sädehoitojen suunnitteluun. Pilvipohjaisten ratkaisujen kehittäminen on Cloud Services -tiimin työtä. Kehittämistyö toteutetaan ketterillä menetelmillä. Tavoitteena on nopeuttaa ja parantaa hoitoprosessia ja siten saattaa enemmän potilaita sädehoidon piirin. Oikein ajoitetut, tehokkaammat hoidot parantavat potilaan elämänlaatua.
Ketterä ohjelmistokehitys tarkoittaa erilaisia menetelmiä ja periaatteita, joilla ohjelmistojen tuotantoprosessia viedään eteenpäin. Hyvin toteutetun järjestelmän toiminnallisuuteen voidaan tehdä suuriakin muutoksia koko sen elinkaaren ajan. Tavoitteena on tuottaa arvoa nopeasti ja kerätä hoitohenkilökunnalta, fyysikoilta, lääkäreiltä, dosimetristeiltä sekä tutkijoilta jatkuvaa palautetta.
Pilvikehittämisessä hallitaan lyhyttä ja pitkää aikaulottuvuutta
Varianin pilvikehitys on rytmittynyt kahden viikon mittaisiin sprintteihin. Tuotevastaava eli Product Owner edustaa tiimissä asiakkaan ja sidosryhmien ääntä sekä tuo tiimin keskusteltavaksi pitkän aikavälin ja kahden viikon odotukset palvelun kehityksestä.
Keskustelun pohjalta suunnitellaan ja toteutetaan sprintti, joka itsessään on kuin pieni ohjelmistoprojekti sisältäen kaikki uusien toimintojen julkaisemiseen tarvittavat tehtävät. ”Tehtävät jaetaan pieniin palasiin päivätasolle. Ero entiseen näkyy muun muassa siinä, että pilviympäristö on koko ajan kunnossa ja työjono aina ajan tasalla”, kommentoi Päivi Varianin pilvitiimin työskentelyä.
Päivillä on pitkä, 23 vuoden tausta Varianissa. Hänen urapolkunsa on edennyt Varianin eri aloilla ohjelmistosuunnittelijan, teknisen vastaavan ja päällikön roolien kautta Cloud Service Manageriksi. Hänen mielestään itseohjautuvan tiimin esihenkilön tärkeimpänä tehtävänä on itseohjautuvuuden tukeminen vahvan läsnäolon, vuorovaikutuksen sekä kiinnostuksen kautta. ”Vaatimus olla jatkuvasti perillä teknologian kehityksestä ja oman ajankäytön suunnittelu ovat asioita, joihin kiinnitämme huomiota räätälöimällä huippuosaajillemme soveltuvaa koulutusta sekä kehittämällä ajankäyttömme suunnittelua”, kertoo Päivi.
Merkityksellistä työtä uusien työtapojen ja teknologioiden parissa
Varianin Cloud Services -tiimin keskeisiä rooleja ovat Scrum Master, ohjelmistoarkkitehti, DevOps, testaajat, kehittäjät ja kyberturvallisuusasiantuntija. Scrum Master ohjaa tiimin työprosessin. Hän poistaa tekemisen esteitä ja tarkkailee työn etenemistä. Arkkitehdin tehtävänä on orkestroida kehitystiimin työtä ja palvelun siirtoa kehitysympäristöstä ja loppukäyttäjien ympäristöön. Testaamisesta vastaava henkilö todentaa palvelun ja tunnistaa siinä ilmenevät virheet ja puutteet. Devops viittaa menetelmiin, joilla integroiminen, käyttöönotto ja asetukset saadaan automatisoitua. Ohjelmistosuunnittelijan tehtävänä on luoda, ylläpitää, tarkastaa ja parantaa järjestelmää vastaamaan asetettuja tavoitteita ja vaatimuksia. Terveysteknologian toimiala on vahvasti säänneltyä, joten kyberturvallisuusosaaminen on keskeistä, koska ollaan tekemisissä terveyteen liittyvien tietosuoja-asioiden kanssa.
Joona Hartman on tiimin pilviarkkitehti. Hän on koulutukseltaan ohjelmistokehityksen diplomi-insinööri, joka on työskennellyt Varianissa vuodesta 2007 lähtien. Häntä innostaa eri palvelutarjoajien viitekehykset liittyen pilvikehitykseen ja niiden mahdollisuuksien tunteminen. ”Nautin nopeatahtisesta työstäni ja siitä kun saan nähdä asiakkaalla lopputuloksen käytössä. Pilvikehitys yhdistää Varianin ja asiakkaan tiimit ympäri maailmaa, sillä mukana on muitakin kuin tuotekehittäjiä”, kommentoi Joona työnsä mielekkyyttä.
Jing Wang toimii tiimissä ohjelmistosuunnittelijana ja Fullstack-kehittäjänä. Jingillä on tietojenkäsittelytieteen maisterin tutkinto Pekingin ilmailu- ja avaruustekniikan yliopistosta ja hän on työskennellyt useassa yrityksessä mm. ohjelmistokehityksen ja testauksen parissa. Varianissa Jing on työskennellyt vuodesta 2017 ja hän toimii tiimissä useammalla pilvikehityksen osa-alueella. Lopputuloksen ensisijaisuus, suora viestintä ja nopea muutoksiin reagointi painottuvat ketterän tiimin työskentelyssä. ”Olen tavoiteorientoitunut ja minulla on hyvät projektinhallinta- sekä viestintätaidot, mistä tässä työssä on hyötyä. Ketterässä toimintatavassa tiedonjakaminen on keskeistä. Meillä on joka toinen viikko tilaisuus, jossa käydään läpi status ja uudet ominaisuudet. Nautin Varianissa avoimuudesta ja vapaudesta sekä siitä, että voin tehdä korkeatasoista merkityksellistä työtä”, kertoo Jing.
Varianin Cloud Services -tiimi on hitsautunut yhteen, mutta ei ole sisäänpäin kääntynyt, vaan hyvin sosiaalinen. ”On tärkeää, että tiimi oppii koko ajan uutta liittyen esimerkiksi uusiin teknologioihin,sidosryhmiin tai työtapoihin. Lisäksi tärkeää on tukea tiimiä haasteiden edessä ja kulkea kohti onnistumisia ja oppimiskokemuksia”, päättää Päivi.
