Varian Medical Systems Names New Corporate Vice Presidents For Treasury And Human Resources

PALO ALTO, Calif. April 26, 2004 Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) today announced that its board of directors has elected Wendy S. Reitherman as vice president of human resources and Franco N. Palomba as vice president and treasurer for the company.Both are joining the company in the first week of May.

“With these appointments, we are adding two capable professionals who come to Varian Medical Systems with both previous experience in and a good understanding of our business and operations,” said Richard M. Levy, chairman and CEO for the company.

Ms. Reitherman, 52, assumes responsibility for managing worldwide human resources and environmental health and safety for Varian Medical Systems. She is replacing John “Jack” McCarthy, who will be retiring after serving 37 years with the company.She will report to the CEO.Ms. Reitherman has served in a wide range of human resource management posts for several companies, including Varian Associates where she worked from 1979 to 1990.She is coming to Varian Medical Systems from Sun Microsystems.She has a BA in English from Boston University and an MA in English from Stanford University.

As treasurer, Palomba, 42, will be responsible for domestic and international cash management, foreign exchange activites, derivatives, credit, receivables, and stock administration.  He also will be responsible for the company’s risk management, tax, fleet, and travel functions. He will report to Elisha W. Finney, vice president and CFO for the company. Palomba comes to Varian Medical Systems from a position as vice president and controller of Varian, Inc. where he has worked since 1999.From 1984 to 1999, Palomba worked with Varian Associates, Coopers&Lybrand, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, in various audit management positions.

Palomba earned a BS degree in accounting from California State University - Hayward and an MBA in administration and finance from the College of Notre Dame in San Mateo.
