Varian Medical Systems Contracts to Provide Cancer Care Systems to HSCA Members

PALO ALTO, Calif., -- July 20, 1999 -- Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR) today announced it has renewed a sole source contract to supply Health Services Corporation of America (HSCA) members with its advanced systems for treating cancer with radiotherapy through the year 2002. The contract covers Varian's state-of-the-art equipment and software for IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy), including the new EX Platinum Clinac� linear accelerator and the Generation 6 line of fully integrated treatment delivery systems.

The multiple-year contract has a potential value of up to $45 million. Under the agreement, HSCA will supply its members with Varian Medical Systems' full range of products including Clinac linear accelerators and Ximatron� treatment simulators as well as multi-leaf collimators and other accessories for state-of-the-art IMRT. The Varian Medical Systems products also include software for planning treatment and managing patient information, brachytherapy systems, and medical imaging systems.

"We now are offering Varian's EX Platinum System, a cost-effective and fully integrated package for IMRT, which is becoming the preferred treatment method among hospitals and cancer clinics."

HSCA is a leading national organization providing purchasing agreements, consulting, and information services for client hospitals, health systems, and other healthcare facilities across the United States. Its membership is comprised of approximately 2000 healthcare facilities, including more than 700 acute care hospitals. Currently celebrating its 30-year anniversary, HSCA offers members tools to reduce operating costs, including operational improvement expertise and data management services.
