Varian Medical Systems to Exhibit Latest Technology for Image-Guided and Stereotactic Radiotherapy at 2004 American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Meeting

PALO ALTO, Calif.and Pittsburgh, PA -- July 20, 2004 -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) will exhibit the company's latest technologies for treating cancer using stereotactic and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) at the upcoming 2004 meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) from July 25-29, in Pittsburgh, PA. In addition, over 250 medical physicists are expected to attend a Varian-sponsored IGRT symposium on Sunday, July 25, to hear presentations by clinicians from Emory University, Henry Ford Health System, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the University of Florida.

“This is an exciting time in the field of radiation therapy,” said Kolleen Kennedy, vice president of Varian's Oncology Systems business. “We are showcasing a set of versatile, automated, and clinically-practical solutions for many forms of image-guided radiation therapy. Our new On-Board Imager™ accessory, for example, enables doctors to automatically track and adjust for tumor position changes more accurately at the moment of treatment, and that means better use of techniques like IMRT to spare normal, healthy tissues.”

Varian’s Trilogy™ system, which incorporates the On-Board Imager accessory, will also be on display at AAPM. This multifunctional linear accelerator, with a full complement of accessories and software, can deliver many forms of radiation therapy, including conventional, 3-D conformal, IMRT, IGRT, stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery.

“Varian is outfitting treatment centers with powerful, multifunctional tools so doctors can offer patients personalized cancer care encompassing the most optimal form of treatment for each case,” Kennedy said. “We believe that clinical considerations should drive treatment choices, rather than the limitations of technology.”

Product Showcase
Varian will also showcase, at AAPM:

  • Quality assurance software that makes it easier for hospitals to implement sophisticated treatment approaches like IMRT and IGRT,

  • An industry-leading 3D radiotherapy treatment planning program that creates
complex, sophisticated plans quickly and efficiently,

  • The latest information management systems designed to streamline clinical
    processes,

  • Cone-beam (3-D) CT images from the company’s Acuity™ system for treatment planning, simulation, and verification.

  • Tools for using 3-D ultrasound to position patients precisely for stereotactic
    radiotherapy.

IGRT Symposium
On Sunday, July 25, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, Varian will sponsor an IGRT Symposium at the OMNI William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh. Presentations will cover such topics as linac-based radiosurgery, clinical experience with Varian’s On-Board Imager accessory, and the future role of cone-beam CT imaging in managing tumor motion during treatment.

“In addition to our own IGRT Symposium, over 55 of the presentations and symposia at AAPM this year involve the use of Varian technology more than any other system supplier,” Kennedy commented. “It is gratifying to see our technology being adopted widely, and used to generate new solutions that bring us closer to conquering cancer.”
