Korona-aika muutti service engineer Jan Hedströmin arjen

Jan ajaa
Hoitolaitteita työkseen huoltavan Jan Hedströmin arjesta iso osa on tänä keväänä kulunut tien päällä.

COVID-19 changed service engineer Jan Hedström’s ordinary daily work

Although COVID-19 related restrictions had an unpredictable impact on the daily work of service engineers like Jan Hedström, the servicing of radiotherapy machines has continued throughout in these exceptional times.

Jan Drives
Over the past few months, Jan has spent a huge amount of his time on the road

“My work usually includes a lot of air travel in Finland because for the most part, service work cannot be performed remotely. This spring however, with air and train travel closures, a typical day can begin with a seven-hour drive to the site, followed by the actual installation work when I finally arrive,” Jan said. “Luckily I can stay at a hotel for the night and drive back home the next day.”

Closing borders has resulted in other adjustments as well, since foreign workers have not been able to carry out machine installations in Finland. Jan’s broad experience and resilience was put to the test in Joensuu when a German service engineer was forced to return home and could not complete his work.

“My supervisor asked me if I could handle the installation in Joensuu. Without hesitation, I promised that I would do it because I had the expertise, although I usually do not work on installations. Everything went well and I managed to keep to the original schedule, even though I had to work on the installation for two weeks, Jan said.

In Joensuu, microwave gastronomy and instant coffees became surprising lifesavers for Jan

“The Joensuu installation proved to be a bit of a challenge when it came to having meals. First, I arrived at my hotel to find it was closed and that my reservation had been moved to another hotel in the same city. Then, at the hospital where I was working, I found the personnel’s lunch cafeteria had closed and the personnel had been advised not to use the patients' canteen. Since the restaurant at my hotel was closed as well, there was nowhere to have a meal. I didn’t take long before I came up with the idea of buying a microwave and kettle and prepare my own meals and coffee In Joensuu!” Jan revealed.

For now, Jan is back to his normal duties with servicing, but continues to drive long hours to get to work.

“Fortunately, now I can buy takeaway coffees and meals when I’m on the road, and don’t have to carry the microwave with me anymore,” Jan says, laughing.
