Varian Medical Systems Reorganizes Management Team to Accommodate Continued Rapid Growth

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Oct 2, 2002 -- Richard M. Levy, President and CEO of Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR), today announced a reorganization of his management team that will structure the company to accommodate continuing rapid growth. The changes will consolidate global operations and provide additional management resources for developing early-stage emerging businesses.

Tim Guertin, President of Oncology Systems - Varian Medical Systems' largest business segment - has been named the Executive Vice President of the company. Guertin will continue to serve as President of the Oncology Systems business in addition to assisting Levy with corporate issues. To consolidate operations and improve efficiencies, several new appointments were made within the Oncology Systems' management team reporting to Guertin:

-- John Ford, Corporate Vice President, has been named Senior Vice President, Oncology Systems, responsible for facilitating major customer, government, and partnering initiatives.
-- Jeff Marcus, Vice President of Oncology Systems, will assume responsibility for the worldwide sales organization. Paul Rowland, Vice President, North American Sales, Oncology Systems, will head the sales organization in the U.S. and Canada and report to Marcus.
-- The medical manufacturing operations for Oncology Systems will be combined under Keith Krugman, Corporate Vice President and Vice President, Oncology Systems, who will also continue to be responsible for worldwide customer support functions. Elaine McKinley has been appointed Vice President, Oncology Systems Customer Support, reporting to Krugman.
-- Product engineering and marketing have been combined under the direction of Kolleen Kennedy, Vice President, Oncology Systems. Ueli Graf, Vice President, Worldwide Engineering, Oncology Systems, will report to Kennedy.

Emerging Businesses
Varian's emerging businesses in security and industrial inspection as well as brachytherapy will be further strengthened under dedicated management that is intended to serve as a catalyst for more rapid expansion. Lester Boeh, Vice President of Oncology Systems, has been assigned responsibility for the segment's security and inspection business, which supplies specialized linear accelerators for cargo screening and industrial inspection. He will report to Guertin.

"Heightened security concerns and the proven performance of our product in systems operating throughout the world give this business potential for significant growth," Levy said. "Our brachytherapy business has been incubated successfully within our Ginzton Technology Center and we are ready to move it into the next phase of this development," said Levy.

William Hyatt, Vice President and General Manager of Varian's brachytherapy business, will now report directly to Levy and take on expanded management responsibilities for global sales and service. "The new structure together with these appointments sets the stage for continued strong growth by capitalizing on the considerable management talent within our company," said Levy.

Timothy E. Guertin, 53, is Corporate Executive Vice President and President,
Oncology Systems, the company's largest business segment. He has been with the
company since he joined Varian Associates in 1976 as an engineer. Since then,
he has held a variety of positions, including general manager of customer
support, general manager of the radiation division, and corporate vice
president. Mr. Guertin holds a BS in electrical engineering and computer
sciences from the University of California at Berkeley. He was elected a
corporate vice president in 1992.

Lester D. Boeh, 40, Vice President, Oncology
Systems, is responsible for the business segment's security and inspection
business, which supplies linear accelerators for cargo screening and
industrial applications. Mr. Boeh joined the company in 2001 as vice president
for strategic programs, after twelve years' tenure in increasingly responsible
positions at Siemens Medical Systems. Mr. Boeh holds an MBA from Duke
University.

John C. Ford, 58, Corporate Vice President and Senior Vice
President, Oncology Systems, is responsible for facilitating major customer,
government, and partnering initiatives for the business segment. During his
30-year career with the company, Mr. Ford has held a variety of sales and
marketing positions within the company's Oncology Systems business, including
president of international marketing. Mr. Ford has been involved with the
design, development, and marketing of numerous products, including several
generations of medical linear accelerators. Mr. Ford holds a PhD in physics
from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was elected a corporate vice
president in 1999.

William D. Hyatt, 60, is Vice President and General Manager
of Varian Medical Systems' brachytherapy business. He directs all operational
and tactical areas of the business, including global sales and service. Mr.
Hyatt joined Varian in 1998, bringing a broad range of sales and executive
management experience, including an eight-year tenure as Chairman and CEO of
Luxtron Corporation. Mr. Hyatt holds a PhD in physics from the University of
Illinois.

Kolleen T. Kennedy, 43, Vice President, Oncology Systems, leads the
business segment's engineering and marketing functions. Ms. Kennedy joined the
company in 1997 as delivery systems marketing and business development
manager. Prior to her arrival at Varian, Ms. Kennedy managed radiation
oncology product sales and marketing at Radiation Oncology Computer Systems,
Inc., and before that at Siemens Medical Systems. She holds an MS in medical
physics from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Keith E.
Krugman, 56, Corporate Vice President and Vice President, Oncology Systems,
oversees the medical manufacturing operations for the business segment. Mr.
Krugman is also responsible for Oncology Systems' customer support and service
unit, which he has built into a more than $145 million annual business since
assuming responsibility for it in 1989. Mr. Krugman joined Varian in 1978 as
an accounting supervisor, and has since held a variety of positions including
controller of the Oncology Systems business. Krugman has a BS in business
administration from Washburn University. He was elected a corporate vice
president in 2000.

Jeffrey A. Marcus, 43, Vice President, Oncology Systems,
directs the business' worldwide sales organization. Mr. Marcus joined Varian
in 1997 as director of national accounts, and has since held a variety of
positions within the company's sales organization, including vice president of
North American sales. Prior to joining Varian, he held senior business and
sales management positions with Becton, Dickinson and Company, a medical
technology company. Mr. Marcus holds a BA in psychology from the University of
South Alabama.

Margaret (Elaine) McKinley, 57, is Vice President, Customer
Support, Oncology Systems. Ms. McKinley joined the company in 1979 as a
contract administration manager. She has subsequently held numerous positions
covering operational and tactical areas, including product manager, marketing
services manager, marketing sales support manager, and director of sales and
marketing operations. Ms. McKinley holds an MS in public administration from
Golden Gate University. Paul H. Rowland, 48, Vice President, North American
Sales, Oncology Systems, is responsible for a 50-member direct sales force in
four regional offices. Mr. Rowland joined Varian in 1977 as a marketing
engineer/physicist, and has since held a number of positions within the
company's sales organization, including regional director and director of
North American sales operations. Mr. Rowland holds a BS in math and physics
from Westminster College, an MS in biotechnology from Carnegie Mellon, and a
MMgt degree from Northwestern University.
