Varian Equips Spanish Hospital with Advanced Image-Guided Radiotherapy Equipment

Pamplona, Spain, February 11th 2008 – Cancer patients in northern Spain now have access to advanced image-guided radiotherapy treatments with the opening of a new radiotherapy centre in Pamplona. Hospital General de Navarra, which has just begun treatments, is equipped with state-of-the-art treatment machines and software from Varian Medical Systems, the world leader in radiotherapy.

The hospital, which serves a population of 600,000 in the Pamplona region, is one of the first in the country to install a powerful and versatile Trilogy® linear accelerator. A fully-accessorized Trilogy device, equipped with Varian’s On-Board Imager® for fast and effective image-guidance, is capable of offering all standard radiation therapies as well as the most advanced treatments such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and whole-body stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), which are all aimed at increasing precision and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Anastasio Rubio Arróniz, chief of radiotherapy physics, “This new department means are able to deliver the latest radiotherapy treatments to all our patients using the latest techniques. We were not able to offer IGRT treatments before this.” Prior to the arrival of the three modern linear accelerators, the hospital was equipped with two ageing machines that were unable to deliver advanced treatments.

Dr Arróniz said that his team at the hospital, which is a public hospital treating more than 1200 cancer patients each year, had started delivering treatments using image-guidance while stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments would also commence in the near future.

As well as the Trilogy accelerator, Varian has supplied two advanced Clinac® 21EX accelerators and a full suite of ARIA™ information management software and Eclipse™ treatment planning software. Doctors at the hospital are also able to plan and simulate treatments using a Varian Acuity™ device with cone-beam CT. “We selected Varian equipment and software because we consider it to be the world’s leading company in the field of external-beam radiotherapy,” added Dr. Arróniz.
