On August 8, 2016, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and UC Health celebrated the grand opening of their new Proton Therapy Center, equipped with the ProBeam® System from Varian Medical Systems.

Located at Cincinnati Children’s Liberty Campus, the new $120 million Proton Therapy Center houses two treatment rooms offering image-guided intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT): One treatment room is devoted to pediatric patients and the other to adult patients. In addition, there is a dedicated non-clinical research room that could be used to help clinicians investigate possible combinations of proton therapy and immunotherapy. This could aid in the development of future treatment modalities designed to target complex cancers in children and adults.

Patients are currently scheduled to begin treatments in September 2016. The Proton Therapy Center is the third facility with Varian’s ProBeam System to begin clinical operation in North America. By delivering the most precise form of proton therapy, the center will give patients access to a level of cancer care available at only a few locations around the world.

“We are proud to partner with Cincinnati Children’s and UC Health to accelerate the pace of clinical research and raise the scientific bar in the fight against cancer,” said Dow R. Wilson, president and chief executive officer, Varian Medical Systems. “And we are committed to helping them succeed in their efforts to save the lives of thousands of children and adults in the years to come.”
