What is it you do at Varian?

I’m Scrum Master of my team and try to shield them from external noise whenever possible. This usually means a lot of meetings and discussions until written agreements are reached. I also do new feature implementation, design documentation, bug fixes and more. In general, normal software engineer work.

Previous career highlights?

I used to work in embedded software for home automation, writing C code for microcontrollers with very limited hardware resources and Linux kernel drivers.

How did you end up at Varian Finland?

I wanted to transition from embedded development to a frontend developer position, and Varian had some interesting vacancies that included the familiar C# and C++ languages. After the job interviews I was shown some code that I would need to work on, and it looked bigger than anything I had done before. It was a great opportunity and challenge.

What are the best things about working at Varian?

Despite deadlines, the working environment is more relaxed compared to previous companies where I’ve worked. It is very easy to strike up a good conversation about almost any topic.

Describe your current work community?

We have a great team working on finding solutions to our challenges, and we’re always willing to help each other. There is always someone who can help out with an issue and support you.

What gives you a sense of purpose at work?

New challenges – it can be design, implementation, a bug to solve or perhaps a customer complaint to be investigated. performing very different tasks keeps the work interesting.

Suggestions for improving working conditions?

Sometimes it’s unnecessary hard to find all the information you need, or to localize a person who has it. It would be great if we had a platform for internal employee communication in technical topics.

Would you recommend Varian as an employer? Why?

Yes! Working at Varian is quite different, due to the strong regulation on medical companies and the processes we have in place. It is not always easy to start here, and the work might not be for everyone, but if you like a challenge, it is a great place to work.

A hidden talent or something your workmates might not know about you?

I love baking cakes, pies or smaller sweets at home. I find it fascinating how difficult it can be to create a good cake or pastry and make it raise properly with right temperatures and processing. Most of the times it is not as easy as merely mixing all the ingredients and heating up the oven.
