Software Architect Dino Väärä: The diversity of our development team ensures a better user experience
When Dino Väärä first walked through the doors of the small Finnish start-up company Noona Healthcare in 2017, the team only had three software developers. Noona’s product – a smart cloud-based mobile service designed to capture patient-reported outcomes in oncology – had raised Dino’s interest in the company and was the reason he decided to join the team.
Noona became a part of Varian in 2018. Within a couple of years, the size of Dino’s team expanded to more than forty members. The team based in Finland and the U.S. became not only larger but also culturally diverse.
“At Varian, we are a global community of people with very different ethnic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. This heterogeneity is a huge advantage. The fusion of different people and views brings a broader perspective to technical problem solving and user experience development – two of the most important dimensions in software development. In practical terms, the more diversified the development team, the better the service for the patient,” Dino said.
Problem-solving is precisely what inspires Dino as well as most of his colleagues. “My key responsibility as a Software Architect is to ensure the realization of Noona’s technical vision and its integration with Varian’s objectives. My work goes beyond solving isolated issues: I solve fundamental problems that allow me to bring people, processes, and technologies together towards a common path,” he said. “This work is very interesting but rather invisible to many people though.”
Globalization, technological development, and digitalization have increased the demand for software professionals. Dino believes that software development will become even more relevant in the future as organizations can no longer survive in the market without software knowledge.
Dino believes that as the software industry surges forward, taking giant leaps, competence requirements can also change considerably in a matter of months. For a software developer, a keen interest in the industry trends as well as keeping one’s expertise up to date is essential to preserving proficiency. He stays on the edge of the latest trends by actively following conversations and keeping up to date with the latest publications.
Dino offers some advice to future professionals in the field: “At the moment, the demand for knowledge of cloud solutions is continuously growing. A wise developer will keep their eyes and ears open to the DevOps concept and consider taking some courses in business as well because it is important to understand how organizations and businesses operate. But beyond this, remember that in the end, the most important element in software development is always the service user. At Varian, our work is best guided by considering the benefits we can deliver to the patient. Technology only acts as an enabler in this equation.”
When asked about what inspires him the most, Dino said without hesitation: “Our vision – a world without fear of cancer. This gives purpose to everything we do, and it is a privilege for me to work toward that goal with my team at Varian.”
Ohjelmistoarkkitehti Dino Väärä: kehitystiimin monimuotoisuus takaa paremman käyttäjäkokemuksen
Kun Dino Väärä astui ensimmäistä kertaa töihin pieneen suomalaiseen startup-yritys Noona Healthcareen vuonna 2017, oli tiimissä kolme ohjelmistokehittäjää. Dinon kiinnostuksen Noonaan oli herättänyt erityisesti yrityksen kehittämä mobiilipalvelu, jota käytetään potilaan ja hoitohenkilökunnan välisessä kommunikaatiossa osana syöpähoitojen vaikutusten seurantaa.
Noonasta tuli osa Variania vuonna 2018, ja muutaman vuoden aikana on tiimin koko kasvanut yli neljäänkymmeneen Suomessa ja Yhdysvalloissa. Tiimin vahvistuessa on myös sen kulttuurinen tausta moninaistunut.
“Varianin voimavara on monimuotoinen, globaali työyhteisö, jonka jäsenet tulevat hyvin erilaisista etnisistä, kulttuurisista ja koulutuksellisista taustoista. Erilaisten ihmisten ja näkökulmien törmääminen tuo laajemman perspektiivin tekniseen ongelmanratkaisuun ja käyttäjäkokemuksen haasteisiin. Juuri tämä on yksi ohjelmistokehityksen tärkeimmistä ulottuvuuksista. Käytännössä palvelumme on syöpäpotilaan kannalta sitä parempi, mitä monimuotoisempi tiimi sitä on ollut kehittämässä”, Dino kertoo.
Ongelmien ratkominen onkin juuri asia, joka Dinoa useimpien kollegoidensa tapaan kiehtoo. ”Vastaan työssäni ohjelmistoarkkitehtina Noonan teknisen vision toteutumisesta ja integroitumisesta Varianin tavoitteisiin. Oma työni menee siis yksittäisiä ongelmia pidemmälle: ratkon fundamentaalisia ongelmia eli kokonaisuuksia, jossa ihmiset, toimintamallit ja tekniikka kytketään samalle yhteiselle tielle. Erittäin mielenkiintoista, vaikkakin käytännössä se voi olla monelle näkymätöntä työtä”, Dino naurahtaa.
Kansainvälistyminen, teknologian kehittyminen ja palveluiden digitalisaatio ovat kasvattaneet ohjelmistoalan osaajien kysyntää. Ohjelmistokehityksen merkitys vahvistuu Dinon mukaan entisestään tulevaisuudessa, sillä markkinoilla voi enää selviytyä ilman softaosaamista.
Alan kehittyessä vauhdilla myös osaamistarpeet voivat muuttua huomattavasti vain puolessa vuodessa. Dino pitääkin kiinnostuneisuutta ohjelmistoalan trendien seuraamiseen ja osaamisen päivittämiseen ammatillisen kompetenssin säilymisen kannalta välttämättömänä. Itse hän pysyy alan trendien ja aallon harjalla seuraamalla aktiivisesti keskusteluita ja lukemalla uusinta kirjallisuutta. Alalle tuleville hän tarjoaa vinkin:
”Tällä hetkellä pilvialustojen osaamisen merkitys kasvaa jatkuvasti - samoin DevOps -termin ympärillä on hyvä olla hereillä. Eikä muutama kurssi yrittäjyyden opintojakaan ole haitaksi, sillä se auttaa ymmärtämään organisaatioiden tavoitteita ja niiden toimintaa.”
”Softakehityksessä tärkein osapuoli on kuitenkin aina palveluiden käyttäjä. Heidän saamansa hyöty ohjaa työtämme ja tekniikka on tässä yhtälössä mahdollistajan roolissa. Varianilla kaikki tehty työ kiteytyy visioomme maailmasta ilman syövän pelkoa, ja olen etuoikeutettu että saan työskennellä tuon tavoitteen eteen”, Dino toteaa lopuksi.
