Varian Medical Systems Introduces a Data Protection Service Based on Double-Take from NSI Software

High Availability and Rapid Recovery Protection (HARRP) to be Offered to VARiS Vision™ Oncology Information Management System Customers

PALO ALTO, Calif. And HOBOKEN, NJ — February 28, 2005 — Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR) today announced a new data protection service designed to provide users of the company’s VARiS Vision™ oncology information system with continuous protection for their mission-critical data in the event of a disaster or system outage. HARRP, which stands for High Availability and Rapid Recovery Protection, is based on NSI Software, Inc.’s (NSI®) patented Double Take® software technology.  HARRP is designed to enable data-dependent oncology departments to recover VARiS data quickly and easily when there are day-to-day failures or catastrophic disasters involving network data servers.

“Oncology departments are generating an explosion of digital data and images that are crucial to today’s sophisticated treatments, including IMRT and real-time image-guided radiotherapy,” explains Christopher Hanna, PhD, Varian’s vice president for oncology information systems.  “ For radiation therapy, each patient’s treatment seeks to maximize the dose to the tumor, while protecting the surrounding healthy tissues.  Treatments are based on a mountain of data about the patient’s anatomy and treatment plan.  You do not want a patient showing up for a daily treatment, and finding that you cannot proceed because of data loss.  HARRP will help to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

Without a system for disaster recovery, once data is lost, it can take a long time to bring systems back on line.  With HARRP technology, if a server goes down, a treatment center can be back up and running within an hour.

The HARRP technology replicates changes in data as they occur at the byte level over a shared or private IP-based network.  This means that changed data is captured almost immediately, and that an up-to-date replica of that data can be accessed if needed.  In the event of a primary server outage, the software enables a secondary server to stand in with the push of a button.

“In the past, our VARiS Vision customers have had to make their own arrangements for backing up data or putting disaster recovery protocols in place,” Hanna said.  “Now, with HARRP, customers need not solve this problem on their own.  We can help them—especially those treatment centers that do not have extensive IT resources.”

HARRP can deliver significant value to medical facilities by making critical data continuously available.  Because it is based on the Double-Take software, data protection is completely seamless to the organization, meaning healthcare professionals can focus on patient care, rather than worry about the stability of their IT infrastructure.    “ The healthcare industry is one of several markets where NSI Software is seeing strong demand for its software, due to the mission-critical nature of data in supplying quality patient care and complying with regulatory requirements,” said Don Beeler, President and CEO, NSI Software.

“NSI has developed its reputation as the de facto standard in data protection and recovery for Microsoft® environments because it provides a cost-effective, high-performance solution.  More than 180 Fortune 500 companies, including some of the world’s largest healthcare organizations, use Double-Take to ensure rapid recovery from disasters or system outages, and we look forward to bringing these capabilities to Varian’s customer base.”
