WUXI, China, March 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR) today announced the opening of Jiangsu Varian Medical Systems Co., Ltd, its regional service center here that will produce and perform repairs of key imaging components for X-ray equipment in China. This new service center in the Jiangsu Province is expected to shorten the production and repair cycles of imaging components for local X-ray equipment manufacturers and further enhance Chinese enterprises' competitiveness in local and international markets.
Varian's 3,700-square-meter Wuxi Service Center will operate two X-ray tube production lines and one repair and service center for flat panel detectors. It has a current estimated capacity of 2,000 tubes and 800 panels a year.
"For our Chinese customers, production and repair needs for most tubes and flat panels will be satisfied locally," said Dr. Zhang Xiao, Vice President of Varian Medical Systems in Greater China. "With the manufacturing and repair capacities of the Wuxi Center, Varian has the opportunity to help our Chinese clients access opportunities locally for upgrading medical imaging devices, and to support local partners by strengthening their competitiveness and helping them become world-class suppliers with systems that are 'powered by Varian.' We expect to help our customers significantly reduce the time and cost of repairs by eliminating the need to ship components in and out of China."
Tubes and flat panel detectors for X-ray imaging are core components for X-ray diagnostic devices. Only a few manufacturers around the world have the capacity to design and produce flat panel detectors, and detectors often have to be sent to a service center outside China for repair. The newly-built flat panel detector repair center in Varian's Wuxi facility uses the same technologies as the service center in the United States. Additionally, Varian is the only supplier with complete imported flat panel detectors repair capabilities in China.
"Varian is supportive of the 'roots in China, serving China' initiative," said Sunny Sanyal, Senior Vice President and President of Imaging Components for Varian. "By developing the service center in Wuxi, China, together with our Beijing Center, Varian will offer professional, convenient, efficient and high-quality local services for our clients in China."
"By investing in our Wuxi facility, Varian is strengthening its commitment to be an integral part of the ongoing effort by the government in China to enhance care in its primary level medical institutions with world-class medical equipment made by local manufacturers," Sanyal said.
