DART | Treatment Process

Dynamic Adaptive Radiotherapy (DART™) is a natural progression from the convergence of IMRT, IGRT, and dose guidance. The Varian™ DART solution places the best planning and treatment tools at the clinician's fingertips through a fully integrated oncology environment.

Dynamic adaptation can be accomplished using existing levels of staff, within normal treatment windows for optimum efficiency. DART lets clinicians evaluate up-to-the-second patient information, adapt the treatment strategy immediately, and manage specific disease sites with specially designed tools. For any patient challenge, DART helps keep treatments right on target.

Localization and immobilization

EXACT® and EXACT IGRT Couch with indexed immobilization
  • Exact repeat positioning for accurate set up every time
  • Indexed immobilization reduces set-up times and ensures reproducibility
  • Movable, carbon fiber support rails allow transition between oblique and posterior treatments without moving the patient
  • Carbon fiber couch top for high-quality imaging
  • Remote couch motion allows automated patient repositioning.

Treatment planning

Eclipse™ inverse treatment planning system
  • Fast efficient planning workflow and standardization using Clinical Protocols and Smart Segmentation enables DART planning in seconds
  • Automatically optimized dose objective beam orientation improves DART plans in less time
  • Easy 4D viewing enables planning for organ motion for gated or non-gated treatments
  • Plan for high resolution on small target volumes using the high-definition multileaf collimator (MLC) with 2.5mm leaf width

Plan verification

Acuity™ planning, verification, and simulation system
  • Uniquely combines planning, simulation, and motion data for verifying patient plans.
  • Planned field positions can be automatically set up for a more efficient verification process
  • With image controlled simulation the localization process is more accurate and efficient
  • A wide array of integrated in-room imaging tools provides Cone-Beam CT, and radiographic and fluoroscopic imaging.

Treatment delivery

Clinac® linear accelerator
  • Proven standing wave guide technology for stable dosimetry and high dose rates
  • Patented energy switch delivers a full range of therapeutic energies at consistently high dose rates
  • Fastest beam on time to full stability at less than 500 milliseconds
  • Klystron technology provides the most stable and reliable RF power source
  • Auto field sequencing means efficiency in treatment delivery
On-Board Imager® with Cone-Beam CT
  • Fully automated real-time imaging system enables clinicians to pinpoint tumor sites, adjust positioning, and complete a treatment all within the standard timeslot
  • On-Board Imager operates along three axes of motion for optimum positioning
  • High precision image tracker shows internal anatomic landmarks and tracks motion
  • Toolkit includes radiographic 2D imaging, and fluoroscopic and 3D cone-beam CT for fine tuning patient positioning just prior to treatment
  • Volumetric cone-beam CT provides a high-quality 3D image to help distinguish tumors from surrounding soft tissue and improve tumor targeting
Millennium™ Multileaf collimator
  • Large DART treatment field at 40x 34cm without moving the patient
  • Highly accurate leaf positions mean greater precision for dynamic targeting
  • Exclusive Dynalog files enable the analysis of planned versus actual leaf position
  • Modify treatment routinely to account for gradual reductions in tumor size
Real-time Position Management™ (RPM) system
  • Non-invasive automated system synchronizes breathing motion with image acquisition
  • Radiation beam is gated to when the target falls within the treatment field
  • Patient can breathe naturally and remain comfortable, increasing compliance
  • Adjust beam to internal organ movement during treatment with real-time motion management

Quality assurance and verification

DART QA solutions
  • Faster and easier DART QA reduces time spent on QA
  • Efficient pretreatment QA compares relative and predicted dose
  • Quick verification enables analysis and documentation without film
  • Exclusive Dynalog analysis for instant in depth analysis of DMLC
  • Achieve the ultimate level of confidence in patient care by validating each treatment with 3D QA plans and portal dosimetry
PortalVision™ Portal imaging
  • Integrated amorphous silicon imager allows immediate online visual confirmation of patient positioning
  • Optimal system design for high clinical resolution with compact image files

Image and information management

ARIA™ Oncology Information System
  • Oncology specific EMR provides instant access to the most current patient information and images
  • Offline review of images acquired at treatment streamlines the IGRT process and guides future treatment decisions
  • Enterprise wide connectivity enables automatic updates to the patient chart allowing you to make more informed clinical decisions
