Image Guided Brachytherapy

Image guided treatment for cervical cancer using MRI data set

Increasingly, imaging plays a major role in brachytherapy by

  • Helping doctors decide the appropriate target location
  • Planning the radiation prescription
  • Guiding the placement of applicators.

Early brachytherapy techniques were limited because precise anatomical information was not integrated into the process. Image guided brachytherapy (IGBT) solves this problem by using cross sectional image data to create 3D models of the anatomical structures. With this information, clinicians can more precisely plan and deliver the radiation to the target while sparing surrounding health tissues.

As a leader in IGBT, Varian supports the technique with specific product developments:

  • Designed as a 3D image-based system, BrachyVision™ brachytherapy treatment planning system allows the user to co-register multiple 3D image data sets such as
    • Computerized Tomography (CT)
    • Magnetic Resonance (MR)
    • Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
    • Ultrasound (US)
These images can be easily navigated using the translation and rotation tools to get the best possible view of where the target and critical tissues are in relation to the brachytherapy applicators and dose.
  • Varian's expansive selection of applicators includes titanium applicators. In providing the optimum in visualization for both CT and MRI imaging, titanium applicators offer the advantages of being:
    • easily sterilized
    • lightweight yet robust construction
    • small diameter tandems for easy insertion.
  • Acuity BrachyTherapy Suite with afterloader Acuity™ BrachyTherapy Suite™ integrated IGBT solution places both Varian's Acuity™ treatment planning, simulation & verification system with an HDR afterloader in the same procedure room. This setup allows imaging, including flat panel planar digital images and cone beam CT imaging, to guide the placement of applicators, and help create the treatment plan. The suite allows treatment of the patient without the logistic and applicator movement problems that can result from moving the patient between applicator placement, imaging, and treatment delivery steps.
  • 3D ultrasound images facilitate image guided treatment planning for LDR prostate VariSeed™ LDR prostate treatment planning system provides tools for real time dosimetry superimposed on live ultrasound images. Using these tools, the dose can be displayed to the physician as the implant progresses.
  • Vitesse™ real time planning for HDR brachytherapy allows the capture of needle placement data together with transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images. Capturing these images at the time of implant allows for rapid and potentially real time IGBT for HDR prostate cancer.
