President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Timothy E. Guertin is president and chief executive officer of Varian Medical Systems and a member of the company's Board of Directors.
Mr. Guertin, 60, joined Varian in 1976 and has served in several key management positions during his 34-year tenure with the company. Prior to being appointed CEO in February, 2006, he served a year as Varian's president and chief operating officer. He was general manager and president of Varian's Oncology Systems business, the company's largest business and the world's leading supplier of linear accelerators for radiation therapy for cancer, from 1990 to 2005. While managing Varian Oncology Systems, Mr. Guertin was named a vice president in 1992 and executive vice president in 1999. Prior to becoming head of Varian Oncology Systems, he held a variety of positions, including general manager of customer support between 1982 and 1989. He holds a BS in electrical engineering and computer sciences from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Guertin is past chairman of the Board of Directors of the AeA (American Electronics Association), now TechAmerica, a nationwide trade association that represents all segments of the technology industry, and he remains a member of the board and executive committee of that organization. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Medical Imaging and Technology Association (MITA), and he served as chairman of MITA’s Therapy Systems Division. Mr. Guertin is also on the board of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. In addition, Mr. Guertin sits on the corporate council of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), a professional society of radiation oncology clinicians, and is on the board of the Radiation Oncology Institute, an education and research organization dedicated to advancing the use and effectiveness of radiotherapy.
