General Advice

Useful Lifetime of Hardware

PC technology advances rapidly, with new generations of PCs becoming available annually or sooner. Customers investing in a oncology information system should be prepared to replace or upgrade their hardware every two to three years. Improvements in the usability of computer software, such as graphical user interfaces, have always demanded increased performance from computer hardware. Varian expects this trend to continue.

Over time, Varian will continue to improve its oncology information systems (OIS) to deliver even greater functionality and ease of use. In order to take full advantage of Varian's future improvements, it will be necessary to periodically upgrade the processors, memory, disk storage and other components of PCs used for OIS.

This specification describes hardware that will provide good performance for the OIS applications to be released through 2008, and includes suggestions for hardware to be used with the image-based applications. Because needs and requirements can change, its recommended that customers consult with Varian before investing in hardware and system software. Not all manufacturers' PC equipment will give equivalent performance or is compatible with all software. Varian has a list of specific computer models which have been used successfully with Varian's OIS.

It is important to purchase PC equipment through a reputable dealer who can provide assistance in setting up the hardware and software, will exchange items that do not work properly, and can provide long-term support.

Hardware and system software supplied by Varian are leading name brands known worldwide for their quality. Compatibility with Varian's OIS is assured with these systems. Installation and testing of hardware and system software purchased through Varian are included in the purchase price. This ensures a smooth installation of your OIS and also guarantees that the all systems operate with one another.

Software and hardware supplied by Varian will have on-site service and support for a limited time during the warranty period. To guarantee that customers get support appropriate to their needs even after the warranty period, Varian offers a range of software and hardware support plans.

PC Training

With each new OIS, Varian will train the department on the use of the applications. Basic PC skills are a prerequisite for applications training. These skills, particularly Microsoft Windows operations, must be learned by the department before applications training begins. Many local vendors offer effective Windows training courses at reasonable prices.

System Administration

Plan to have someone trained as a network system administrator. If the department or hospital is not staffed to provide this service, many vendors can provide such services within North America.
