Proton Therapy | Treatment Process

As cancer fighting technologies continue to evolve, cancer patients expect the latest and very best treatment facilities. Varian has designed the proton therapy system to be highly adaptive and scalable to help clinics improve service to the community as new treatments emerge.

Not only is the proton therapy system designed to accommodate future technologies, but it also helps address the most cost-effective needs of your facility today. For instance, you can start with a single-room center and expand to a multi-room facility. Since all hardware is modular, even large centers can expand and upgrade as required.

Larger treatment centers will find that the Varian system is capable of servicing the most challenging population demands as well.

Treatment Planning and Preparation

Eclipse™ treatment planning system
  • Fast efficient planning workflow and standardization using Clinical Protocols and Smart Segmentation features enables proton therapy planning in seconds
  • Automatically optimized dose objective beam orientation improves plans in less time
  • Easy 4D viewing enables planning for organ motion for gated or non-gated treatments
  • Multi-channel DDR allows the creation and blending of multi-channel DDRs for better visualization of air, soft tissue and bone
Treatment Rooms
  • Built-in scalability enables facilities to start with a single-room and add more rooms later
  • Gantry rooms enable the beam to be fully rotated around the target tumor providing flexibility to select any beam angle for optimal beam delivery
  • Fixed beam rooms offer a horizontal beam that can be optimized for eye, head, and neck treatments or combined with specialized treatment tables for a variety of treatments
Patient Positioning System
  • Nozzle contour and diagnostic equipment optimized to achieve exceptional treatment angle ranges
  • Equipped with six numerically controlled axes
  • Sensors detect patient weight and automatically correct positioning to compensate

Treatment Delivery

Varian 250 MeV Superconducting Cyclotron Proton Accelerator
  • Stable beam current and beam intensity modulation allows precision spot scanning and 3-dimensional proton dose distribution to produce remarkable accuracy
  • Lightweight, compact size optimizes space usage
  • Superconducting magnet coils result in high extraction efficiency, low energy consumption, great reliability, and an overall reduction in operating costs and maintenance
  • Compact accelerator with a weight of 90 tons
  • Provides a comfortably high energy of 250 MeV or an equivalent range of 37.6 cm in water, which allows the treatment of deep seated tumors
  • More than 80% of the particles from the accelerator can be injected in the beam transport system, so the accelerator stays ‘clean’ and can be serviced easily
  • Energy consumption is low due to the extremely low power losses in the superconducting coils. Linear and predictable behaviour allows true automization and requires no routine operators
Beam Transport System
  • Segmented so additional treatment rooms can be added later
  • Energy Selection System located outside the treatment room to eliminate neutron production close to the patient
  • Control system automatically tunes the magnets to accommodate the treatment room, the energy level and size of the pencil beam
Gantry
  • Combination of gantry and treatment table offers the flexibility to treat patients from all angles
  • Two large roller bearings and counterweight balancing provide exceptional mechanical rigidity for exceptional angular precision
  • Supports multiple nozzles, which are equipped with laser sensors to ensure patient safety
Pencil beam scanning Nozzles
  • Provides optimal dose conformity
  • Delivers low neutron flux
  • Maximum flexibility provides a field area of 30 x 40 cm2

Image and information management

ARIA™ Oncology Information System
  • Oncology specific EMR provides instant access to the most current patient information and images
  • Offline review of images acquired at treatment streamlines the proton therapy process and guides future treatment decisions
  • Enterprise wide connectivity enables automatic updates to the patient chart allowing you to make more informed clinical decisions information
  • Supports workflow and data management necessary for proton therapy treatments
